The BOMO project studied the sustainability of short supply chains for wood-based products in the Alpi Lepontine mountain region of Italy. The project involved over 250 small- and medium-sized enterprises, examined the environmental impacts and economic feasibility of local supply chains using tools like life cycle assessment and lean thinking, and sought to increase awareness among consumers and public authorities of sustainable forest management practices. Key aspects considered included the forest biomass carrying capacity and how to optimize supply chain logistics, materials and energy flows, and socio-economic development impacts at the local level.
