DESSO: Cradle to Cradle Company Statement from Michael Braungart Prof. Dr. Michael Braungart is very excited about the start of a long term relationship with DESSO. “ By committing themselves to the Cradle to Cradle production circle, DESSO will be supporting the good health of the planet and helping to improve product quality and environmental performance via eco-effectiveness”. Prof. Dr. Michael Braungart , Chemist and Founder of the Environmental Protection Encouragement Agency (EPEA)
DESSO: Cradle to Cradle Company Eco-efficiency Increased attention on sustainability Efficient production Waste reduction Energy saving Desso’s past achievements Water preservation annually 50% in Belgium, goal 100% (= 410 million litres) Energy consumption 23% reduction in energy use and CO 2 emissions over the last 10 years Recycling Post industrial waste is recycled and used as fuel
DESSO: Cradle to Cradle Company Eco-effectiveness Positive footprint Improve quality of life and environment Re-utilize all materials used in the product. Design criteria: easy disassembly Use post-customer materials as raw material in the product All raw materials should be 100% safe for humans and environment Use renewable energy in all stages of the cycle All about Eco Effectiveness

Biological cycle
DESSO is doing research on prototype carpet and carpet tiles with materials in the biological cycle. Here some examples of carpets with yarns made out of paper, bamboo and jute. DESSO: Cradle to Cradle company Biological cycle

DESSO is targeting at a prototype in the biological cycle by the end of 2010 with more or less the same features as modern contract carpet. At the moment durability is still a problem but the bamboo yarn looks promising. DESSO: Cradle to Cradle company Biological cycle

Desso is progressing fast with Cradle to cradle products in the technical cycle. An alternative for the traditional, bitumen based backing had to be found. Bitumen as a product is safe and gives the tiles fantastic features but the content can vary and is therefore not suitable for a cradle to cradle carpet tile backing. .
