As a renewable energy source, the liquid level measurement of biogas digesters has
been put to the test. As we all know, in the industrial field, the application of radar level
gauges is becoming more and more common.
So, can the radar level meter be used to measure small biogas pools? This article will
discuss the principle, measurement range, error analysis and other aspects of the radar
level meter.
The characteristics of small biogas pools are small size, simple structure and easy use.
Since the composition and density of the fermentation products in the biogas digester
are relatively stable, the liquid level changes relatively regularly.
However, the liquid surface in the biogas digester fluctuates greatly, and there may be
problems such as foam and suspended matter, which will have a certain impact on the
reflection and propagation of radar waves. Different types of radar level gauges have
different measurement ranges. Generally speaking, they are within a range of tens of
meters.
For small biogas pools, the liquid level height is usually between 1-3 meters. Therefore,
the measurement range of radar level gauges is The range fully meets the requirements.
At the same time, the antenna diameter and transmission frequency of the radar level

Radar level gauge uses the time of microwave pulse propagation in space and the
known propagation speed to calculate the height of the measured liquid level. The radar
wave is emitted through the antenna and reflected back, and is received by the receiving
antenna. By measuring the time difference between the emitted and reflected echo, the
liquid level is calculated.
Radar level gauge has the advantages of non-contact measurement, high accuracy,
good stability, and wide application range.
The possible errors of the radar level gauge when measuring small biogas pools mainly
include the following aspects: Launch angle: The launch angle of the radar wave will
affect its propagation path and reflection effect, thereby affecting the measurement
accuracy. Therefore, choosing the appropriate launch angle is the key to ensuring
measurement accuracy.
Surface fluctuation: As mentioned above, the liquid surface in the biogas tank
fluctuates greatly, which may cause the radar wave to be unable to accurately reflect
back to the receiving antenna, thus affecting the measurement results.
At this time, auxiliary equipment such as waveguides can be used to reduce the impact
of surface fluctuations on the measurement results. Installation position: The
installation position of the radar level gauge will also affect its measurement accuracy.
The appropriate installation height and angle need to be selected to ensure that the radar
waves can be accurately reflected back to the receiving antenna.
Environmental factors: Environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, pressure,
etc. will also affect the propagation of radar waves, thereby affecting the measurement
accuracy. Therefore, these factors need to be considered when selecting and using radar
level gauges.
