This essay discusses the connection between spiritual practice, theological inquiry, and self-reflection. It argues that these are not mutually exclusive, but rather intrinsically connected. Spirituality and self-reflection promote an examined life connected to a larger moral vision extending beyond the self. The essay will use Karl Rahner's work "The Hearer of the Message" to demonstrate the links between academic/spiritual life, religious tradition/community, and theology/self-reflection. It will argue that pursuing philosophical theology both religiously and academically can deepen one's spiritual understanding and benefit the community.
