So now we have the concept title CARBON FOOTPRINT!! But what does it mean? ‘The carbon footprint is a measure of the impact that human activities have on the amount of greenhouse gases produced, measured in terms of kilograms of carbon dioxide produced per year.’(from ‘AQA A2 Human Biology by Lowrie and Goodger)by Sara Gandey (2010)
BUT THERE ARE DIFFERENT TYPESPRIMARY CARBON FOOTPRINT This is a measure of how much carbon dioxide is given out directly by energy consumption so you are in control of this type of carbon footprint.SECONDARY CARBON FOOTPRINT This is a measure of carbon dioxide given out that is not under your control by products you consume.by Sara Gandey (2010)
CLASSIFYING CARBON FOOTPRINT ACTIVITYThe following activities in a person’s life are examples of primary or secondary carbon footprints (adapted activities from ‘AQA A2 Human Biology’ by Lowrie and Goodger):Imported foodHome appliances permanently on stand-byReady-mealsEating large quantities of red meatFlying to work from London to ShorehamUsing a car to drive into town for 2 minutesCheese-stringsEnergy-efficient condenser boilerUsing a tumble-drierDrinking bottled/filtered water onlyTASK: On your worksheet- follow the instructions to complete the tableby Sara Gandey (2010)
