Map Your Success [email_address] Career Search Skills & Career Planning

Career The occupational positions a person has had over many years.
Career management The process for enabling employees to better understand and develop their career skills and interests and to use these skills and interests more effectively
Career Management for Individuals Setting Career Goals Self-Assessment Feedback on Reality Career Management
Career development The lifelong series of activities that contribute to a person’s career exploration, establishment, success and fulfillment

Career planning The deliberate process through which someone becomes aware of personal skills, interests, knowledge, motivations, and other characteristics and establishes action plans to attain specific goals.
Significant Developments More horizontal “ladders” in middle management More strategic focus on core competencies Careers as a series of projects, not upward steps in an organization Career development now extends to all employees In “new career” era, the individual manages own development, not the organization. Employees who change jobs and employers frequently are now the norm.

How People Choose Careers Career Choice Social Background Interests Self-Image Personality
Selecting a Career is completely like selecting the LIFE “ The most important step is investing time in yourself to explore your passions , your strengths , your interests ”
What are Pre requisites ? Desire Ability Opportunity
There is a PROBLEM Mis-match between Education & World of Work
Attitude Society Media Home School Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference. Life is 10 percent what you make it and 90 percent how you take it
Dignity of Labour… All the people like us are We, And everyone else is They
Higher Education Individuals are responsible for their career path. A university degree does NOT guarantee employment, but it sure helps give options. Individuals must accept risks that accompany employment and plan for the future. Commitment to lifelong learning will help keep an individual employable. . . . learning has just begun!
Become an Entrepreneur “ We make Roads by walking” Do things that are not generally done in the ordinary course of business
CAREER Key You (needs, values, abilities, skills, aspirations, interests) Matching Occupation (The Job's demands and potential for satisfying your needs)
What should YOU look at when considering a career? What are my strengths? What do I like to do? Will I be able to get a job if I do what I like ??? Cost, Time and other Logistics! What profession is in demand TODAY? Will my progress be faster than others? Would my earning capacity grow exponentially??
Seven Point Plan by Alec Rodgers (1968) 7 attributes to consider physical (height, weight, mobility, disability, health) attainments (qualifications, achievements) general intelligence special aptitudes (artistic, technical etc) interests (intellectual, practical, physical) disposition (personality, temperament) circumstances (marriage, children, location
What is Talent Knowledge Experience Intelligence Judgment Attitude Character Drive Energy Leadership Emotional maturity The willingness to learn Tact
YOU- a brand Setting yourself aside - brand “you”
Tom Peters believes that answering the following questions will help to focus your brand related activities:
1. What you are known for now and what you will be known for next year? 2. What is challenging you, which might include your current project or role? 3. What you have learned in the last 90 days? 4. Who has been added to your external network? 5. What does your visibility (marketing) programme looks like? 6. What you are doing to enhance your resume over the next 90 days? 7. What have you done over the last year that has enhanced your resume?
YOU are a BRAND Brand loyalty Brand awareness Brand associations Brand quality
- Reliable Hardworking, secure, efficient, trustworthy, careful - Intelligent Technical, serious - Successful Leader, confident, influential
Brand characteristics Sincerity - Down to Earth - Honest Sincere, real, ethical, thoughtful, caring - Wholesome Original, genuine, - Cheerful Sentimental, friendly, warm, happy
Personality - Daring Exciting, … - Spirited Lively, outgoing, adventurous - Imaginative Unique, humorous, surprising, artistic, fun - Up-to-date Independent, contemporary, innovative,
Your employability Thinking like a vendor (or perhaps like a consultant).

Take the initiative and apply for a job.
Come to work on time !
And this… Dress nicely
Be courteous
And always… Do a great job a work… …everyday!
And don’t do the other stuff!
Remember this!

REMEMBER: No one should trust you if you can’t trust yourself Take yourself seriously or no one else will either. It’s hard to overcome self doubt, but get comfortable with the following: I will be wrong sometimes I can admit it and move on when I am wrong I can always learn best after a mistake
