SPECIAL TESTING
OF CARPET
INTRODUCTION
Carpets used to be hand woven. However, today, fast and many carpet production is
provided by machines. Old carpets are much more valuable, but the quality of machine
carpets is increasing day by day. The share of carpet tests performed by authorized
laboratories is very high. At the same time, many standards have been developed by
domestic and foreign organizations.
Why Test?
There is no way to predict the performance of a carpet system without conducting a test. The resistance of carpet to
the spread of flame is a function of
• The generic type of face yarns used, The type of construction, including yarn texture,
• The density of the pile, and
• The presence of an under layment , attached or Separate.
SPECIAL TESTING OF CARPET
TESTS
The main tests performed to determine the quality of carpets are:
• Carpet abrasion test,
• Dynamic load application test,
• Static loading test,
• Pile height determination,
• Burning resistance test and
• Attrition test.
Other than these, the carpets Other tests are performed to determine their physical properties.
CARPET ABRASION TEST
• Specimens of carpet are abraded by being rubbed against a standard abradant material.
• Specimen and abradant are clamped to the ends of two vertical shafts, the centres of which
are offset. The shafts rotate in the same direction and at the same speed, giving a motion
which ensures constant relative velocity between specimen and abradant at all parts of the
specimen.
• The recommended pressure for carpet testing of 0.56kg/cm².
The test specimen is a circle of 38mmdiameter which is held in the specimen head
DYNAMIC LOAD APPLICATION TEST
• Used to detect crush and damage caused by carpet pile laying, walking on it.
• Using specialist equipment, dynamic load testing for carpets entails applying
different pressures to simulate foot activity or loads.
STATIC LOADING TEST
• The thickness loss resulting from use in carpets is measured using the static loading
technique. The carpet is first put through a simulation of use, and the thickness loss
that results is then measured.
• Involves applying a consistent load to the carpet for a specific duration to evaluate
its performance.
PILE HEIGHT DETERMINATION
• Involves measuring the height of the fibers above the backing material using a
specialized gauge.
• Helps ensure the carpet meets specified height requirements, impacting its
appearance.
• It allows to assess the carpet's quality, considering factors such as softness,
resistance to crushing or matting over time.
BURNING RESISTANCE TEST
• Involves subjecting a sample of the carpet to an open flame or controlled heat
source to assess its ability to resist burning.
• This test is crucial for safety and regulatory purposes,
• During the test, the sample carpet is exposed to the flame for a specific duration
while monitoring its reaction to the heat and flame. Some Factors are observed and
measured.
ATTRITION TEST
• To ascertain how the general appearance of carpets varies with use, attrition
tests are conducted.
• The undercoats of carpets are also detected by these tests for wear.
• This test also illustrates the elongation and flexibility characteristics of carpet
and floor coverings.
SUMMARY
Here is the summary of Special Testing of Carpet. They are
• Carpet Abrasion Test evaluates a carpet's wear resistance by subjecting it to abrasive action,
simulating foot traffic. Measures the loss of fiber and appearance changes.
• Dynamic Load Application Test assesses carpet's ability to withstand heavy loads and
repetitive impacts to simulate furniture movement and high foot traffic.
• Pile Height Determination Test measures the length of carpet fibers to ensure consistency and
quality.
• Burning Resistance Test determines a carpet's reaction to fire, assessing its flame-retardant
properties and spread of flame.
• Attrition Test determines carpet durability through rubbing and abrasion, evaluating its
resistance to wear and tear over time.
CONCLUSION:-
There is no way to predict the performance of a carpet
system without conducting a test. So, it is very much
important for a carpet to test it and to be presented that carpet
to all very effectively. For this, Special testing of carpet is
very much important in Textile Testing
