GUVI conducted a Python workshop at Anna University to teach the programming language using a new visual and native language-based approach. Assessments found that the workshop significantly improved participants' basic understanding of Python and confidence in coding. It also increased average test scores from 50% pre-workshop to 80% post-workshop. While advanced skills and speed did not increase as much, participants were satisfied overall with the learning experience and GUVI's teaching methodology of combining classroom and online content in the native language. The workshop showed promise for making programming education more accessible.

- 2. Learning outcome of Workshop This case study is prepared by IIT M’s Rural Technology & Business Incubator (RTBI). The core focus of RTBI is Incubation. As an Incubator, RTBI’s objective is to identify, nurture and support entrepreneurs aspiring to evolve rural/social inclusive business models leveraging Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). RTBI looks at strengthening and supporting entrepreneurs whose start-up aims to have a larger and cascading impact on the rural and underserved populace. GUVI is one of the incubatee of RTBI and currently RTBI is providing mentorship and other handholding support to GUVI. This case study has been developed by RTBI as an incubation support activity for GUVI. About the author:

Learning outcome of About GUVI About the presentation • GUVI was started as a unique community involving people who are passionate to learn and share technical knowledge in their mother tongue. • GUVI tries to connect with everyone in their preferred language and it provides a platform to share people’s skills and learning through videos. • It also conducts workshops in various colleges to impart the programming skills to the students in an unusually faster way through a new approach of teaching. This new approach uses visual medium and mother tongue based teaching to give computer programming training to all. • GUVI conducted more than 10 workshops in five months in various colleges . The outcome of these workshops were often increase in both skill and confidence level for the participants. • To number of participants, the workshop has imparted industry oriented programming skills through both classroom based training and self learning videos. Workshop METHODOLOGY Learning outcome of Multiple forms of assessment: Rigorous and multiple forms of assessments techniques were adopted to measure what the students learnt throughout the workshop. a. Summative assessment Pre & post assessment test and coding contests were conducted to measure the improvement of students understanding ability and application skills b. Students feedback The feedback of the students also used for the assessment of the usefulness of the workshop. - 7. Workshop METHODOLOGY Learning outcome of Pre & Post assessment tests: A pre-assessment test consisting of 25 questions was conducted for the participants. The questions were framed to test the basic understanding about the Python programming, basic syntaxes, application of python programme etc., The results of the pre-assessment tests were considered as a base line for the measurement of learning outcomes. Coding contests: To measure the improvements constantly, coding contests were conducted. These tests facilitated the participants to compare their performance with other participants. Participants feedback: Students were asked about their rating for the learning through the feedback forms. The 5 star rating scale is used for measurement. Participants can know their improvement through pre and post tests Through the coding contests participants can compare their performance with other participants Feedback from the participants gave a clear picture about participants perception about the change.

So, participants felt less improvement in advanced python and programming speed. But the advanced python skills and programming speed can be increased by continuous effort by the participants post workshop. GUVI provides support online for the interested students to improve skills in advanced python. However GUVI’s workshop significantly improved the basic understanding level of participants and gave confidence to the learners about the python programming language.

The reasons may be due to the usage paper based exam, lack of facility for immediate results, no opportunity for participants to evaluate themselves under various criteria. Simply 20 questions were asked in pre and post tests without any categorisation of questions.

The participants were evaluated through 25 questions of various toughness level. On an average students scored 50%. In the post workshop test, students performance has been increased and they scored 80% on an average. Same toughness level was maintained in the post workshop test also.
- 11. Workshop CONCLUSION Learning outcome of Giving technology education for all in their native language by using the power of visual medium is the main objective of GUVI’s existence. The participants of this workshop were comfortable in both English and Tamil. But all the participants rated GUVI’s approach of teaching in native language above 3 out of 5. The main reason for the GUVI’s success in delivering programming classes in native language is the overall learning experience in GUVI’s teaching methodology. GUVI teaches in classroom and also provides learning content through online. GUVI’s methodology will be more beneficial for the students who are not so comfortable in learning programming language in English. One of the important learning outcome was GUVI’s success in building basic skills and confidence for the participants to do coding in Python language. If this success can be replicated to students who are not comfortable in English language, the impact will be remarkable.
