However, only 7 percent of job seekers have created an online portfolio. • #3: Your LinkedIn profile is your online business card, your resume and your letter of recommendation all in one. According to LinkedIn.com, users with 100% complete profiles are 40 times more likely to receive opportunities through Linkedin. Remember, the more information you provide, the more people will find reasons to connect with you because it’s difficult to build connections if people don’t know you exist or if they can’t see what you have to offer.

• #7: It’s much easier to publicize your LinkedIn profile with a customized URL, rather than the clunky combination of numbers that LinkedIn automatically assigns when you sign up. Plus, if you use a consistent name across all of your social networks (and you should), this is a great way to boost your own “brand awareness.”  Laugh if you will, but it’s an important part of networking. And when it comes to networking, do you really want anything less than a custom URL on your business card? We think not.
• #8: Now that you’re profile is complete, how do you get connected? A great way to gain connections in LinkedIn’s community of over 150 million professionals is by joining groups. Have you ever wondered which LinkedIn Groups would be most valuable to your career? Have you explored new groups and wondered, how active is this group, is this the group for me, or what kind of professionals are in this group? Well, for every group on LinkedIn Today there is a Group Statistics dashboard that delivers unique insights into groups to help you determine if it’s something that you want to be a part of. Group Statistics tool focuses on three areas: demographics, growth, and activity.   1. Demographics: In the demographics view, it shows you who’s in the group.  You can see information about the seniority level, function/role, location, and industry of the various professionals in the group.  Now it’s easy to learn which groups are local, which groups cater more to entry-level types vs. CEOs, or which groups are focused in your own industry. 3. Activity: In the activity panel the focus is on comments and discussions, the heart of professional conversation in LinkedIn Groups.  Here, you can easily see whether members start and contribute to discussions regularly. It’s also important to note that it’s very easy to sync any of this information to your twitter or facebook accounts.
• #9: Remember, LinkedIn is only as valuable as you make it – so the best way to add value to your activity is by connecting with professionals. Remember, A social networking site doesn’t do you much good if you don’t focus on building a network and adding to your connection base. When you join LinkedIn, it will ask to sync with any existing contacts you have, but if you’ve already mined your email contacts for possible connections and have exhausted LinkedIn’s People You Should Know recommendations, there’s an easy way to expand your network— using your connection’s connections. Simply go to a friend or colleague’s profile and click Connections in the main profile box. From there, you’ll see an alphabetized list of connections, and before long you’ll probably be saying to yourself: “Oh, I know her. And him. And I can’t believe I’m not connected to that guy.” And you can quickly and easily send invitations to connect. For me, this is one of the easiest ways to build LinkedIn connections One last reminder: Don’t forget to customize the invitation before you send it. Nothing’s worse than getting the default, “I’d like to add you to my connections,” email for telling someone “you’re so unimportant to me that I can’t take the 20 seconds it would require to send you a personal note.” Just. Don’t. Do. It. Developing the right partnerships and connections to grow and expand your business is essential – as a job seeker, you may have a great “win-win” partnership idea, but no contact at the organization – well LinkedIn can help you with that! By performing an advanced “people search” you will quickly find the right person at the company and determine who you know in common for a warm introduction. If that isn’t possible, then you also have the option to reach our directly via an “InMail”. Use OpenLink Lastly – I don’t have to tell you that LinkedIn is only ONE tool when it comes to networking – so it’s equally important to get into the community.
