CCSS.Math.Content.6 Represent and analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and
independent variables.
CCSS.Math.Content.6.EE.C.9 Use variables to represent two quantities in a real-world
problem that change in relationship to one another; write an equation to express one
quantity, thought of as the dependent variable, in terms of the other quantity, thought of
as the independent variable. Analyze the relationship between the dependent and
independent variables using graphs and tables, and relate these to the equation.
Question:
The table shows how the number of silver cars, s, depends on the number of
yellow cars, y.

Hint:
“The number of yellow cars is 4 more than 8 times the number of silver
cars.”
Solution:
Use two variables to create the equation for the situation.
s = number of silver cars
y = number of yellow cars
Begin forming the equation by writing y, followed by an equals sign.
y =
"8 times the number of silver cars" means that you should multiply the
number of silver cars, s, by 8. Use this information to begin writing the
equation.
y = 8s

"4 more" means that you should add 4. Use this information to finish the
equation as shown.
y = 8s + 4
You can use the table to check your answer. Replace the variable s in the
equation with each number in the s column one by one.
s = 4:
y = (8 × 4) + 4 = 36
s = 5:
y = (8 × 5) + 4 = 44
s = 6:
y = (8 × 6) + 4 = 52
s = 7:
y = (8 × 7) + 4 = 60
s = 8:
y = (8 × 8) + 4 = 68
