Using Bluetooth Low Energy beacons to set up a
local positioning network
What’s the idea?
i.e. ‘GPS on a small scale’
INNOVATE18
Why not just use GPS?
High Accuracy, 100mm rather than 10m
Works underground or inside a building

Editor's Notes

  • #20: 100 Million Holding 4000 Staff UK Sectors Include Civil Engineering Pipelines Tunnels Rail Power Water and Waste Gas Renewable Energy Buildings Petrol Chemical Fabrication
  • #22: The Hochtief Murphy Joint Venture (HMJV) used the Segment Tracking System to improve the efficiencies of its operations. The system has two main outcomes. It records that each tunnel ring segment has reached the required quality standard, that it is within tolerance and that it is deemed suitable for use. It also provides a system for live tracking through the different phases of transportation and installation. A unique barcode is fixed onto two different faces of each segment. The barcode is scanned with a simple handheld scanner enabling the quality criteria to be monitored at each stage of the following sequence:
  • #24: BIM is the umbrella under which intelligent datasets can be shared, our BIM strategy defines a common understanding that captures and validates multiple sets of information allowing the project team to make informed decisions from a single point of information. We recognised the importance of developing a BIM strategy along with our clients and design consultants, implementing BIM processes methodically across the business as required. This is being driven by our Group BIM Manager Lewis Wenman supported by the company BIM Focus Group and supporting project teams where a BIM process is being adopted to maximise the benefit. Murphy’s evolving BIM Strategy is constructed around People, Lean Construction and Client Satisfaction which is central to our “WE CAN DO” vision and values. Understanding Needs Delivering Process Efficiencies Improved Accuracy and Efficiency Delivering Client Requirements Continuously Improving, Removal of Waste
  • #45: An iBeacon is comparable to a radio tower transmitting a signal. When your phone is in reach of a beacon, it will recognise it. Each iBeacon transmits its own signal with a universally unique identifier (UUID). An iPhone or iPad can be an iBeacon, provided it is running iOS 7 or higher. It is also possible to buy separate beacons, there are a number of them available.
  • #49: iBeacon compatible apps Indoor location Proximity marketing Contactless payment Check-in coupons/promotions for you
  • #50: We will be trialling the H&S zoning as it is easier to set up and test. Good to test and prove the concept Hearing protection warning – link noise monitors to cloud and then to wrist watch. Supporting the internet of things
