LEARN – DAY 7
Construction Foundation Course
Week Two: Day 7 (Tuesday)
First and Second Hours (7:30 – 9:30) - 1
• Check-in: Shake hands. Remind students: binders, seating.
Start class.
• Review the day: Review the day’s activities from the list on the
board or chart paper.
• Binder check: This can be done at any time during the day.
Week Two: Day 7 (Tuesday)
First and Second Hours (7:30 – 9:30) - 2
120 minutes
• The topics included in Job Search Skills 2 are
applications, resume, and cover letter You can use your normal
materials for these topics, adjusting for the timeline (almost 5
hours), as needed.
• In Part II – Chapter 5 Resources are 6 resources: sample rubrics and a
sample product for each of the following: application, a resume, and a
cover letter. You can adjust the rubrics to meet the instructional
content, but the standards should not be lower than those reflected in
the sample. The sample products and the sample rubrics align. Have
students practice each of the products working individually, in partner
groups, and in Work Teams to evaluate each other’s efforts and suggest
improvements. Be sure they are using the rubrics in this process. You
can call students to your desk for individual consultations also during
this time.
Job Search Skills 2
Week Two: Day 7 (Tuesday)
Third and Fourth Hours (9:40 – 11:30) - 1
60 minutes
• Continue activity from the previous two hours.
• The goal is to get students to produce the best possible products they can
at this time, even though they may not have much to put on the resume.
They will return to their model application, resume, and cover letter each
time they complete a certification, adding that item and updating any
other elements. When they exit Job Corps, with or without graduating,
they will have the samples they’ve created to help them secure a job.
Job Search Skills 2, continued.
Week Two: Day 7 (Tuesday)
Third and Fourth Hours (9:40 – 11:30) - 2
Interview Assignment
60 minutes
• Today you will focus on the heart of the interview—the questions: what the
questions might be and how to answer them. Items 5-10 on the worksheet
are as follows:
- What are the easy questions they may ask me?
- What are my best answers?
- What are the hard questions they may ask me?
- What are my best answers?
- What question will I ask them if I have the opportunity?
- How will I conclude the interview?
• Pass out copies of ―Commonly asked interview questions‖ from the
resources in Part II. Discuss legality issues related to the types of questions
that can be asked during interviews as well as on applications. Ask
students to meet in their Work Teams for 3 minutes to identify which
questions they think are easy and which might be hard.
Week Two: Day 7 (Tuesday)
Third and Fourth Hours (9:40 – 11:30) - 3
• Meeting back as a large group, poll the Work Teams to which are the
easy questions and which are the hard questions. Taking the easy
questions first, brainstorm what answers you might give. As a group,
prioritize those brainstorm items for each question, including which
shouldn’t be part of an answer.
• Then tackle the hard questions, using the same approach. This should
take no more than 15 minutes.
• Pass out copies of ―Possible interview questions for construction workers‖
(or put this on a PPT slide) from the resources in Part II. Ask students to
shift into job-alike groups, so that all the students who checked Plumber
are sitting together, all who checked HVAC Installer are sitting together,
etc. As noted above, there should only be groups for the training areas
your center offers.
Interview Assignment
Week Two: Day 7 (Tuesday)
Third and Fourth Hours (9:40 – 11:30) - 4
• Have the groups:
- Choose two or more of the possible interview questions for
their job,
- Brainstorm possible answers,
- Prioritize those answers, and
- Prepare to report out.
• With their report out, this activity should take no more than 20
minutes.
Interview Assignment
Week Two: Day 7 (Tuesday)
Third and Fourth Hours (9:40 – 11:30) - 5
• In the large group, discuss items 9 and 10. Feed students ideas for #9, e.g.
- When will you make a decision?
- When will the job start?
- Is the opening for a certain shift?
- Do you supply uniforms?
- Do you have a program to assist your employees who want to go back to
school for higher certification?
• Ask each student to choose the one or two that she/he individually likes
the best and write it down on their assignment sheet.
• For #10, give students 2 exit lines, such as ―Thank you so much for your
time. I really appreciate having the chance to interview with a quality
organization like Construction Solutions.‖ Then ask them to practice with
their Pair-Share partner.
Interview Assignment
Week Two: Day 7 (Tuesday)
Third and Fourth Hours (9:40 – 11:30) - 6
5 minutes

• Questions for Week 2 Quiz: Choose two areas from today’s
presentations and activities. Create 3 multiple choice
questions, like those shown for Day 1, that focus on the most
important information in those areas.
Week Two: Day 7 (Tuesday)
