- 1. CLOUD COMPUTING: MAKING THE UNDERPRIVILEGED YOUTH PRIVILEGED.
- 2. The number of underprivileged youths in Nigeria increases on a daily basis due to the country’s high poverty rate. According to the World Bank (2000), about 70 percent of Nigerians fell below the poverty line of $1.25. These underprivileged youths lack access to the basic necessities of life with the disables being the hardest hit.
- 3. Many of these youths spend their night-time under the bridges and on the expressways. This is more pronounced in Lagos State. These youths have little or no education and you will agree with me that education is a very powerful means for these youths to carve a niche for themselves. The worth of human society is not in how much it earns but how much it knows (education).
- 4. Cloud computing can act as a platform for underprivileged youths to access education. Cloud computing refers to applications and services offered over the internet. These services are offered from data centers all over the world, which collectively are referred to as the “cloud”. The idea of the “cloud” simplifies the many network connections and computer systems involved in online services.
- 5. With cloud computing, all that will be needed to make these youths literates will be available in the “cloud”. This will eliminate the cost of buying thousands of textbooks and provide an up to date information on the courses to be taught. Subjects to be taught include but not limited to English Language, Mathematics and among other relevant subjects. In addition, we intend to make these youths IT compliant through acquisition of IT skills like word processing, internet training, good typing skills, computer management and among other IT skills.
- 6. All the materials needed for our training will be available in the “cloud”. Thus, these youths will be able to access these materials anywhere and anytime with or without the presence of our tutors. Training will be done in classrooms and this program will commence in Lagos State. For a start, one laptop will be allocated to three (3) youths. With computers getting cheaper by the day, this does not seem unfeasible. Laptop can be gotten in Nigeria for #30,000 ($200) which is very cheap if you consider Nigeria’s economy.
- 7. Nigeria’s erratic power supply may be a problem but we intend to solve this by making use of solar energy in addition to hydropower provided by Nigeria’s power body.

- 9. By 2017, we hope to have empowered about 50 percent of underprivileged Nigerian youths through our program all things being equal. We know that there will be lots of challenges but with strong determination we hope to surmount these challenges. Challenges are only stepping stones to success.
