This study examined challenges and coping strategies among 384 HIV discordant couples receiving care at a center in Eldoret, Kenya. The main challenges reported were negotiating sex (100% of couples), the need for children (94%), and blame for HIV infection. Coping strategies included condom use (74% of couples), abstinence (9%), and sleeping separately (11%). Factors like gender, employment status, and time since diagnosis were significantly associated with experiences of abuse and strategies used. While negotiation of sex was the primary challenge, couples employed a combination of coping mechanisms in response to their discordant status.
