A Map of Options

In most major changes, you will probably act in all four ways.

The healthiest responses are mastery (taking action on things you can control) and letting go (which will give you a
sense of relief and release).

Implications of the Personal Power Grid
  • In most changes, we will see ourselves behaving in all
    four ways
  • Learning to let go is as healthy a response as taking
    action
  • Critically evaluate what you do and don’t have “control”
    over
  • Remember to focus on your own behavior as a source
    of change
Next Steps
Assign Homework

• Apply the Personal Power Grid to a current change you are
  navigating
Personal Power Grid Worksheet
Instructions: Given the challenges facing Paychex and your training and development organization, please think
about a change you are navigating. Specifically, how you are spending your time? Write down what you are doing in
each quadrant. Remember that in most major changes, you will probably be acting in all four ways:
mastery, ceaseless striving, giving up, and letting go.

                                  Can Control/Influence Can’t Control/Influence

     Take Action

     Take No Action

You need to learn to focus your actions on mastery and letting go. These two options will
give you the greatest sense of well being. Please circle the things you can:
                                 • Stop and move out of “ceaselessly striving” and move into “letting go” ?
                                 • Start to take action on and “master” that you are currently “giving up” on?
 Identify what specific action you will take to demonstrate “letting go” and
                                           “mastery”.
