Application Software : software licensing Packaged software • is mass produced, copyrighted retail software that meets the needs of a wide variety of users Custom software • Performs functions specific to a business or industry. Sometimes a company cannot find packaged software that meets its unique requirements. In this case, the company may use programmers to develop tailor-made custom software. 7

Types of web application such as e-mail and game programs. Freeware • Software that is free to all. However, freeware is Copyrighted: that is, the author may place restrictions on its use. 8

Example, software that developed by university using government grants • Is a variation of freeware. The developers of open-source software make the source code available, which means programmer can understand and modify it. 9
