- #2: Welcome to Chapter 1 – First Steps. These lecture slides will give you an overview of what to expect in each chapter. Please keep in mind though, that viewing this document will not replace reading the textbook.
- #3: Students often report that this is the most important concept in this course. The choice of words we use is important, and that’s what this process is about. Reframing how we think of ideas. This power process asks you to consider thinking of IDEAS as TOOLS. Why do we use the word “tools,” instead of, say, “strategies” or “techniques?” Because in this course, you will be introduced to thousands of new ideas to help you become a more successful student. But the word “ideas” carries with it our belief systems. Throughout this course, whether you are reading the text, watching a video, taking notes, or working on a discussion board activity with classmates, consider all the new ideas you are being exposed to as tools, like a hammer on a shelf. We have no emotional resistance to trying new tools. This is a book, and a course, then of tools for you to try!
- #7: While reading the text, you will review two major components of learning styles. I hope you will see a connection with reviewing the text example of thinking about how one perceives and processes information when one gets a new mobile phone. We are all different in how we take information in and how we think about that information. I’m sure you have heard of a miscommunication that happened – why this happened is likely due to our differences in how we perceive information and how we process it.
- #11: Remember that LLCC offers a variety of resources to help students be successful. You will likely use several of these in completing the LLCC Online Scavenger Hunt Assignment. If there is a service you are in need of, please don’t hesitate to ask myself or another department.
