This chapter of the South Dakota Drainage Manual covers bridge hydraulics. It discusses hydraulic performance criteria for bridges, including design flood frequencies, freeboard requirements, and allowable backwater levels. It also addresses bridge location, stream stability considerations, hydraulic analysis procedures, bridge scour analysis and countermeasures, and bridge deck drainage design. The chapter contains appendices with case studies demonstrating the estimation and review of bridge scour, as well as guidance on hydraulics for temporary facilities and rock riprap at bridge abutments.
