Urinary Elimination
Chapter 16
Urination
• Voiding, micturation, going pee
• Waste product filtered through kidneys
• Normal output varies with age…but should be
no less than 30 ml per hour
• Normal is pale yellow
• Should not have unpleasant odor
Things to report
• Difference in color
• Odor
• Consistency – cloudy?
• c/o pain with urination
Assisting with elimination
• Bedpan
– Fracture pan –flatter than regular
– Regular bedpan
• BSC
• Never place bedpan on table
• Always wear gloves
– Feces, urine = body fluids
• Provide peri care, if needed
Incontinence
• No bowel or bladder control
• Can occur with people who are bed bound, ill,
paralyzed, suffering from some diseases
• Not a normal part of aging
• Briefs
• Peri care
Peri-care for female
Always clean from front to back
Use different area of washcloth for each stroke
Males – pull foreskin back, if uncircumcised
UTIs
• Urinary tract infection
• Prevention of:
• Give good peri care – always clean front to
back
• Give good catheter care
Catheter care
• Use different area of washcloth for each
stroke
• Start at meatus
• Clean down catheter, away from body, at least
4 inches
• Wash, rinse, dry
