Everyone is expected to know how to do it Communication depends on it Hearing ≠ Listening
 
Taking in messages through auditory and visual stimuli People retain only 25 percent of what they hear, so make sure you “WOW” them
Our ability to focus on  one  stimuli Our working memory puts in work Role of motivation / concentration Humans have short attention spans We think at least twice as fast as speakers talk so we tend to tune in and out Communicators must be dynamic and engaging To concentrate is also to avoid distractions Role of paraphrasing If  you can paraphrase, it means you got it/understood
Count the number of times the players in WHITE shirts pass the basketball.  Only those in WHITE shirts. An exercise in: Attention and perception
Perception  = screening process through which we filter messages Selective perception  = we pay attention to whatever is relevant at the time (remember the McDonald’s sign in Times Square?) We all perceive different things
We organize stimuli into categories in order to understand them Schema or schemata =
Intellectual, emotional or behavioral reaction to a listened message Can be internal or external
Role of the speaker Role of the message Role of the channel Role of external and internal variables Role of memory and time
Discriminative listening Comprehensive listening Therapeutic listening Critical listening Appreciative listening
