The Puritans established the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630 to escape religious persecution in England. They soon formed a self-governing commonwealth and their colony grew into New England. However, the Puritans did not tolerate religious diversity and banished people like Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson who disagreed with Puritan laws and beliefs. This led Williams and Hutchinson to establish the new colony of Rhode Island, which welcomed people of different beliefs. Disagreements also prompted the founding of Connecticut by Thomas Hooker in 1636.
