Chapter 6 Section 2Introduction to the Viewpoints of EarthHow to Find Places on EarthLongitude and Latitude can be used as a precise way to determine location. System of imaginary gridlines.
Chapter 6 Section 2LatitudeHorizontal lines paralleling the Equator. Equator divides the Earth into Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Used to measure North and SouthBoth poles are measured at 90 degrees. North Pole= 90 degrees NorthSouth Pole = 90 degrees South
Chapter 6 Section 2Latitude
Chapter 6 Section 2LongitudeVertical lines (called meridians) intersecting the poles. Measure positions East and West on a globe. Begin with the Prime Meridian (0 degrees Longitude)
Chapter 6 Section 2Longitude
Chapter 6 Section 2Using Lines of LongitudeThe Prime Meridian (0 degrees longitude) runs from pole to pole through Greenwich, England)West of the Prime Meridian is measured from 1 to 180 degrees West.East of the Prime Meridian is measured from 1 to 180 degrees East. The 180 degree meridian= International Date Linea. Opposite side of Earth to the Prime Meridian.
Chapter 6 Section 2
Chapter 6 Section 2Latitude and Longitude can be broken downDegrees are the largest measureDegrees are divided into minutesMinutes are divided into secondsWhen writing coordinates latitude is always firstWhen writing coordinates; latitude always comes first.
Chapter 6 Section 2Earth TimeWhat time is it on Earth? The answer actually depends on where you are located. The Earth is divided into 24 time zones. Each time zone is only one hour different from the next time zone. Every time zone is 15 degrees longitude wide. 6 time zones cover the United States.
Chapter 6 Section 2Every time zone you cross going west time goes backwards.Every time zone you cross going East time goes forward.

Chapter 6 Section 2
Chapter 6 :Section 2Calendar DatesNew days begin at 12 midnight for the time zone. Crossing time zones gains or loses an hour. Traveling West: Minersville to California9 am in Minersville, 6 am in CaliforniaTraveling East: California to Minersville1. 9 am in California, 12 pm in Minersville
Chapter 6 :Section 2Crossing the International Date Line (180 degrees longitude)Gain or Lose one dayTraveling West: Asia to the United StatesJanuary 1st in Asia, December 31st in U.S.A.Traveling East: United States to AsiaJanuary 1st in United State, January 2nd in AsiaQuestion? If you leave NYC at 11:00 am and your flight lasts 5 hours, what time is it in San Diego when you land?
