Case Studies in Biblical Leadership
Borek, J., Lovett, D., & Towns, E. (2005). Case Studies from the Bible: The
Good Book on Leadership. Nashville, TN: Broadman & Holman.
Chapter 1: The Nature of Leadership
What does the following statement mean? “Everything rises or
falls on leadership,” John Maxwell/Lee Roberson
Can you think of an example that demonstrates this truism?
Chapter 1: The Nature of Leadership
Four Ways to Describe Leadership
1. Leadership presupposes a leader who is going somewhere
and persuading others to go with them.
2. Leadership is a process of helping people do the
worthwhile things they want to do.
3. Leadership is influence – the activity of influencing people
to cooperate toward some goal they come to find
desirable.
4. Leadership is what happens within a group.
The Eight Laws of Leadership
1. The Law of Dreams – Leaders need a dream or vision of the desirable
2. The Law of Rewards – People follow those who can reward results
3. The Law of Credibility – People follow those with a credible plan
4. The Law of Communication – Must effectively communicate the plan
5. The Law of Accountability – Leaders hold people accountable for results
6. The Law of Motivation – Compelling reasons to reach the objectives
7. The Law of Problem Solving – Gives solutions for the challenges
8. The Law of Decision Making – Good decisions made on good information
Nine Spiritual Gifts that Influence our
Leadership Style
The nine most prominent gifts listed in Scripture
1. Evangelism (Eph. 4:11)
2. Prophecy (Rom. 12:6)
3. Teaching (Rom. 12:7)
4. Exhortation (Rom. 12:8)
5. Shepherding (Eph. 4:11)
6. Empathy (Rom. 12:8)
7. Serving (Rom. 12:7; 1 Cor. 12:28)
8. Giving (Rom. 12:8)
9. Administration (1 Cor. 12:28)
Nine Spiritual Gifts that Influence our
Leadership Style: Evangelism
Eph. 4:11-16, NKJV (Read the entire sentence from the Bible)
11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some
evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the
saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,
Tend to lead by persuading followers of the validity of their plan
and calling them to commitment.
Nine Spiritual Gifts that Influence our
Leadership Style: Prophecy
Rom. 12:6
6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to
us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to
our faith;
Leaders who are gifted in prophecy tend to lead by attacking
problems head-on. Calls others to follow his plan and solve the
problem and change the world.
Nine Spiritual Gifts that Influence our
Leadership Style: Teaching
Rom. 12:7, NKJV)
6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to
us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to
our faith; 7 or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who
teaches, in teaching;
Those gifted in teaching tend to lead by collecting good data and
communicating what they find to others who come to believe the
teacher knows how to solve the problems. They tend to lead by
their insights into what needs to be done to accomplish an
objective.
Nine Spiritual Gifts that Influence our
Leadership Style: Exhortation
Rom. 12:8, NKJV
6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to
us, let us use them: . . . 8 he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who
gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows
mercy, with cheerfulness
Leaders who are gifted in exhortation tend to lead through their
practical strategies (transferable concepts) and their ability to
motivate followers to action.
Nine Spiritual Gifts that Influence our
Leadership Style: Shepherding/Pastors
Eph. 4:11, NKJV
11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some
evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of
the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of
Christ,
Readily express concern for others and are looked to by others
for spiritual counsel and guidance. Leaders who are gifted in
shepherding tend to lead through building healthy maturity into
their followers.
Nine Spiritual Gifts that Influence our
Leadership Style: Empathy/Mercy
Rom. 12:8, NKJV
6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to
us, let us use them: 8 he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives,
with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy,
with cheerfulness.
Leaders who are gifted in empathy tend to attract hurting people
and are somewhat effective in helping them rebuild their lives.
Nine Spiritual Gifts that Influence our
Leadership Style: Serving/Ministry
Rom. 12:7, NKJV
6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to
us, let us use them: . . . 7 or ministry, let us use it in
our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching;
1 Cor. 12:28, NKJV
28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily
prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of
healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
Often called “servant leaders,” they work well in support of
others. They help others achieve their goals.
Nine Spiritual Gifts that Influence our
Leadership Style: Giving
Rom. 12:8, NKJV
8 he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he
who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.
These leaders often develop financial expertise in the process of
developing their gift. They lead through budgets and financial
planning that ensure the project is adequately financed.
Nine Spiritual Gifts that Influence our
Leadership Style: Administration
1 Cor. 12:28
28 And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second
prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings,
helps, administrations, varieties of tongues.
Leaders with this gift excel at making decisions, communicating
ideas, selecting, enlisting, training, and motivating people. Some
writers describe the gift of administration as the gift of
leadership.
Addendum to the Book: The Other Gifts
The authors of this book ignore many of the gifts,
indicating either that they are partial cessationists
(believing that the miraculous or signs gifts have
ceased), or perhaps they believe that only the nine
gifts they list have direct influence on leadership
practices. However, we should look at the other
gifts of the spirit and explore possible leadership
implications.

Four Temperaments that Influence Your
Leadership Style
The Socratic Designations and the DISC terms
1. Choleric – D (Dominance)
2. Sanguine – I (Influence)
3. Melancholy – S (Steadiness)
4. Phlegmatic – C (Consciousness)
Most organizations have moved away from the Socratic
terms and have embraced the DISC terms for the “four
temperament” model.
Four Temperaments that Influence Your
Leadership Style: D (Dominance)
“D” Leaders: Determined, Direct, Decisive
Strong-willed and likes to be in control. They are
goal oriented and want to see results. They are
independent. Quick to recognize opportunities
and push ahead. (Task oriented)
Biblical examples?

Biblical examples?

Happy and pleasant. They are cool, calm,
easygoing and well-balanced. Seldom get their

initiative to get involved and they are
uncomfortable with change. They like things to
remain the same. (People Oriented)
Biblical examples?
Four Temperaments that Influence Your
Leadership Style: C (Conscientious)
“C” Leaders: Conscientious, Controlled, Cautious
These people are logical and cautious. They are
analytical, self-sacrificing and gifted. They are

Situation
Conditional Leadership
Another view is that different circumstances call for
different leaders. For example, an entrepreneurial
leader that is effective in starting a business or a
church may not be able to lead the organization to
significant growth, but another leader with
administrative skills may be needed to take the
organization to the next level. This view presupposes
that it is difficult for people to change their natural
leadership style.
