Kahu, desperate to save her dying great-grandfather and tribe, plunges into the water to communicate with a beached whale. She climbs upon the whale and cries, hoping to convince it to return to sea. Though exhausted, Kahu is able to ride the whale back out to sea with the pod. The whales recognize she is a descendant of their ancient leader Paikea and agree to return her safely home, realizing their fates are now intertwined. Koro Apirana understands Kahu is the one to fulfill the tribe's destiny.
