Kahu's mother Rehua died three months after Kahu's birth and requested that Kahu be named after her father's tribe and have her birth cord buried on her father's marae. Nanny Flowers wanted to raise Kahu but she was taken away by her maternal grandmother. Years later, Kahu's father Porourangi brings her back for a holiday but her great-grandfather Koro Apirana still refuses to accept her. The story then explains their tribal histories and the origin of their ancestor Paikea, who landed on the back of a whale.
