What is a Character Sketch?
DEFINITION :  A character sketch is a short description of a character based on their traits. ELEMENTS:  * Describes at least two traits of the character * Description may include information about~ * What the character looks like * What the character says * What the character does * What the character thinks/feels * What others say about the character
When you write a character sketch- think about the image you want to create in the reader’s mind. You want the reader to be able to visualize the character. You should also have evidence to proof to back up your descriptions. Evidence can be examples from the story or the person’s life.
Before you begin: Brainstorm traits you can use to describe the character. Use a character web to help you narrow down your choices. After you list  your traits, choose the best ones ( no more than 3) to use in your sketch. Sadako Courageous Energetic Caring
Sadako Caring Didn’t want to upset her mother when she couldn’t eat the food she made Became friends with Kenji and gave him a paper crane Energetic She loved to run and was on the racing team Courageous Made paper cranes to help her get well Never gave up despite setbacks
Sample: Who was Sadako Sasaki?  Sadako was a young girl who lived in Japan after World War II.  When thinking about Sadako, a few outstanding traits come to mind.  She was a very caring girl.  She always tried to make other people feel good.  She made a friend while she was in the hospital, Kenji, and gave him a paper crane.  Earning a spot on the racing team was a perfect example of her energetic personality.  Sadako was also a courageous little girl.  She knew she was sick, but still tried to make the best of her situation.  She started to make one thousand paper cranes in the hopes that she will get well again.  Sadako is a girl that is still remembered today by many people all over the world.
