Why all the Fuss?
 Americans consume about eleven pounds of
chocolate per person per year (The Chocolate
Store)! This is a lot of chocolate, and with the tide
of growing obesity in the US, it is important to
know if chocolate contains empty calories or if it
can be healthy.
 Although disagreement on the best type of
chocolate does not cause wars, there is often
heated debate on which type of chocolate tastes
best and which is the healthiest.
It Began with the Olmecs
 Although chocolate is often associated with the Swiss,
cacao beans are indigenous to the Americas and were
exported to Europe. The Olmecs, Mayans, and Aztecs
all cultivated and ate chocolate.
 Strangely enough, Europeans did not put sugar in their
cocoa, but even served it with pepper. The Swiss were
the first to add sugar, and that is why it is often
associated with Switzerland: the Swiss made it
palatable (“History of Chocolate).
 Little did the Olmecs, Mayans, and Aztecs realize that
someday, one of their favorite foods would also be a
favorite food all around the world.
The Argument
 People tend to be milk chocolate aficionados or
dark chocolate lovers, but their preferences
usually rest on how the chocolate tastes and not
the health benefits.
 Dark chocolate can taste bitter to milk chocolate
lovers, but the bitterness depends on the level of
sugar and is also affected by the lack of milk in the
dark chocolate.
 However, studies prove that dark chocolate has
health benefits that are not present in milk or other
types of chocolate (“Dark Chocolate”).
Chocolate is Chocolate!
 Both milk and dark chocolate are made from
cocoa beans.
 Both types of chocolate are made from
ground-up beans that are then liquefied; then,
the liquid is made into cocoa solids and cocoa
butter.
 It is the combination of other ingredients that
make the chocolate dark or milk (“What are
the Differences?”).
Is all Chocolate Created Equal?
 Dark chocolate is made with sugar and cocoa bean
powder and has a high percentage of cocoa solids and
butter.
 Milk chocolate is made with milk powder, sugar, and a
lower amount of cocoa solids and butter. The milk
powder and lower percentage of the cocoa that makes
milk chocolate milder and sweeter “What are the
Difference?”).
 Your PPT should have more points than this! Because
this is an example, I am not going into more depth, but
this should give an idea of how the PPT should be
formatted. There should be at least two slides on
differences.
The Differences in Health
Benefits
 Because this PPT is an example, I am not
going to discuss the differences in health
benefits, but if I were, I would continue point
by point, listing what experts have to say
about the health benefits of dark chocolate vs.
milk chocolate.
 This would take at least two slides.
 In addition, I would also note that dark
chocolate is a mood elevator.
But what about White Chocolate?
 I would also add one slide about white
chocolate because the readers might be
wondering about it.
Regardless . . .
 The Mayans so revered chocolate that they called it “food of the
gods” (“The History of”). Today, people all over the world seem
to agree with this take as humans consume a huge amount
every year.
 For people who are health conscious, chocolate was often
considered a guilty pleasure , but with recent studies, it is proven
that dark chocolate lovers can indulge their passion (in
moderation)and not only receive physical benefits, but can have
their moods lightened, as well.
 Milk chocolate lovers might not make the switch willingly to dark
chocolate (and dark is an acquired taste), but in moderation, they
can also enjoy their daily intake, as well.
 Vive le chocolat! And many thanks to the Olmecs who first
discovered this wondrous food.
