Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) was an Italian explorer who was trying to find a western sea route to Asia but instead accidentally discovered North America. In 1492, with backing from the Spanish monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella, Columbus led an expedition of three ships and became the first European to arrive in the Americas in over 500 years when he landed in the Bahamas. Though he believed he had reached Asia, Columbus had actually reached a "new world." He made three subsequent voyages but was less successful as an administrator of the new colonies.
