The cardiovascular system transports nutrients, hormones, oxygen, and waste throughout the body using the heart, blood, and blood vessels. The heart is a muscular pump made of four chambers that pump blood through two circuits - the pulmonary circuit carries blood to and from the lungs, while the systemic circuit carries blood to and from the rest of the body. Arteries carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart, veins carry oxygen-depleted blood back to the heart, and capillaries connect arteries and veins and allow for exchange of substances between blood and tissues. The cardiovascular system is regulated by the nervous system and hormones to control blood pressure, circulation, and other functions.
