System software is computer software designed
to operate and control the computer
hardware and to provide a platform for
running application software. System software
can be separated into two different categories.
They are:
Operating systems and Utility software
Introduction:
An operating system (OS) is software that
manages computer hardware and software
resources and provides common services for
computer programs.
In other words, operating system is a organized
set or collection of software programs that
control the overall operation of a computer
system.
The operating system is the most important
program that runs on a computer. Without an
operating system, we cannot communicate with
computers.
Operating systems perform basic tasks, such as:
 recognizing input from the keyboard
 sending output to the display screen
 keeping track of files and directories on the disk
 controlling peripheral devices such as disk drives
and printers.
Some examples of operating systems are:
Android, IOS, Linux, OS X, Microsoft Windows,
Windows Phone, Mac OS, Unix and DOS.
Some of the features of operating system are :
 File management:
Operating system handles the file organizations
in the secondary storage devices. Creates table
of each files and directories, maintains
authority over files etc.
 Security:
OS maintains boundary of each job in the
memory and each job are allowed to run only
in that boundary.
 User interface:
The OS reads the commands entered by the
user interprets them and executes them by
hardware.
 Memory management:
The memory management component of the
operating system manages memory efficiently.
And virtual memory is created .
 Event logging:
It records all the events happened which is
very much useful for tracing past records and
troubleshoot if something goes wrong.
 Input/output control:
The operating system deals with the problems
by making input and output devices
independent. The task of managing input
output devices like keyboard, monitor, storage
etc is done by OS.
 Resource allocation and scheduling:
Operating system schedules in order to make
the best possible use of computer resources.
OS is responsible for allocating processing
time, memory and input-output resources.
Utility software is system software designed to
help analyze, configure, optimize or maintain a
computer.
 It helps to manage, maintain and control
computer resources.
 Utility software usually focuses on how the
computer infrastructure (including the computer
hardware, operating system, software and data
storage) operates.
 Examples of utility programs are antivirus
software, backup software and disk tools etc.
Device drivers, commonly just called drivers,
are software programs that allow input and
output devices to communicate with the rest
of the computer system.
 Most new operating systems recognize new
hardware devices on their own and
automatically install them, but sometimes they
require a device driver cd for installation.
 Many device drivers come with system software
when you buy a computer.
 Device drivers should be updated periodically.
This can be done through the suppliers
website.
 Device drivers are very common for printers,
scanners, video adapters and sound cards.
 For example, if you buy a printer, it may come
with a CD that typically will include the
correct driver. The advantage of this is that
the hardware manufacturer can make sure
you have the right driver for the printer.
Antivirus software (often abbreviated as AV)
is computer software used to prevent, detect
and remove malicious software.
Antivirus software is a set of instructions that
detects the type of virus in the computer and
protects against it. Invaders like viruses,
worms, Trojan Horse, script viruses, macro etc,
delete or corrupt the data and consequently
disrupt work.
Some of the antivirus software for desktops
and notebooks available in the market today
are as follows:
 avast! Free Antivirus
 Norton Anti Virus
 McAfee Virus Scan
 AVG antivirus
 Kaspersky Lab
 Trend Micro Antivirus
 Panda antivirus pro
 Comodo antivirus advanced
 King Soft Antivirus
 FortiClient Antivirus
