As you read, many defendants in the criminal justice system are
prosecuted in state courts, which means that for the most part
prosecutors rely on state case law and statutes as guidelines for whether
or not they should be charged. In this assignment, you will select a
defendant who has been prosecuted in your state court. Describe, in 1
page, the case against the defendant and the crimes for which the
defendant has been charged. Examine the punishment assigned to the
offender. If the offender you chose was acquitted or has not yet reached
the punishment stage, you will still be able to examine the punishments
that were available.
Use both the textbook and outside resources such as the Internet and the
Argosy University online library resources to locate the article or case.
Also, consider searching for criminal cases in local or national news
outlets.
Tasks:
Write a 2- to 3-page report describing the punishment that was handed
down to the offender. Be specific and use proper terminology. In your
paper, include the following information:
Explain the purpose associated with the punishment that was imposed.
Describe any other choices the judge could have selected.
Explain the reasoning behind the sentence.
Provide your opinion and analysis. Was the punishment correct, in your
view? Explain why or why not.

Ed Robertson is a twenty-year-old student. He is in his first year at the
local community college. He is pursuing the course to become an
elementary school teacher. He is single and works part-time delivering
pizzas.
Robertson is arrested for sexual assault and torture of a seventeen-year-
old high-school student. Robertson claims that the victim consented to
the sexual act, but later began to cry. He hit her to prevent her from
crying and making a scene. He blames her for the incident and claims
that he is the victim. Robertson has been convicted despite his plea of
not guilty.
He has no prior adult criminal record; however, he has two prior
involvements in the juvenile justice system. While he was being
investigated, several neighbors reported him for mistreating cats and
dogs on numerous occasions.
Tasks:
You are the probation officer who has been assigned this case. You are
required to prepare and submit a PSI report to the trial judge that
includes the following:
The defendant's criminal history
Description of the present offenses involved
Sources of information
Criminal orientation
Defendant's explanations for his conduct
Personal and family background
Educational and employment background
Health
Sentencing options and recommendations
Correctional plan for the defendant with justifications
Justify your recommendations giving appropriate reasons. Support your
answer with the help of research and examples. Your report should be in
proper format for a long-form PSI report.

CJA 140 Module 3 Assignment 2 LASA 1 Impact
of Correctional Theories and Punishment
For more classes visit
www.snaptutorial.com
You will gain an understanding of the evolution of correctional
philosophies and the correctional system in the United States. The
corrections process is a result of society responding to deviance.
Responding to deviance has evolved in many ways around the globe.
The United States has its own evolution of corrections. This LASA will
explore the origin and evolution of prisons from the design of Jeremy
Bentham's Panopticon (all-seeing) Prison to today's modern prison
systems and the prison privatization industry.
Any inquiry into the origin of prisons requires students to include an
overview of the correctional eras in the United States, beginning with
the origin of the Walnut Street Jail in Philadelphia in 1790 and through
the crime control era of today. It is necessary that you examine the
organization of corrections and include the changes in the external
society that led to the policy changes in corrections and correctional
philosophy. You will assess the purpose, implementation, and
effectiveness of corrections, including the major reasons for the
movement toward prisonization starting in the 1960s and the evolution
to today's current corrections practices.
Tasks:
You recently completed a summer work-study program at the Centervale
Corrections facility. This experience has confirmed your interest in
pursuing corrections as a career, and you have started taking classes in
corrections at Centervale University. As part of your introductory course
you are to evaluate, compare, and contrast the historical origins of the
correctional enterprise in the United States and the impact of
correctional theories and punishment around the globe in a 1500-word,
APA style paper (5–7 pages of content, not including the title page,
abstract, references, and table of cases), using a minimum of 10
references and three United States Supreme Court cases dealing with
prison conditions, prisoner rights, and access to medical treatment.
Chapter five, "Prison Systems," of your textbook will give you some
rudimentary information on the current types of prisons; you will
supplement this with empirical research in order to fully explore modern
prison systems and respond to the following:
Examine the correctional eras in the United States starting with the first
era in the 1790s and covering the various eras to include the major
reasons for the movement toward prisonization in the 1960s to present
practices.
Examine the historical evolution of the Panopticon (all-seeing prison
style) developed by Jeremy Bentham and the impact of this style on
modern system architecture and the use of closed-circuit television
(CCTV) cameras.
Analyze the political changes in society and the impact of correctional
rationales on correctional practice; include how special interest groups
and the current intolerance for criminals have forged correctional
philosophies.
Compare and contrast the impact of correctional theories and
punishment on the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of the correctional
enterprise system.
Examine the use and the constitutionality of the prison privatization
industry; include analysis of stockholders' influence on rehabilitation
and what classification of prisoners should be incarcerated in private
prisons compared to state prisons (i.e., minimum, medium, maximum,
and super-max). Articulate your opinion based on empirical research and
citation of court cases and reference materials from academic and
scientific journal articles.
Consider the future of corrections. Compare and contrast the formal and
informal social control around the globe and the impact the social
control has on the future of corrections policies. Reference a modern
prison system, either in your state or in another state, from your
research.
Include an APA-formatted reference page that links back to your in-text
citations and supports your recommendations. Remember, you cannot
have only in-text citations or only references. You must have both
because in-text citations and references link to each other.

CJA 140 Module 4 Assignment 2 The Effect of
the Death Penalty
For more classes visit
www.snaptutorial.com
Polls show that roughly two-thirds of Americans support the death
penalty; however, the recent trend has seen a slowdown in the number of
executions. In 1999, there were 98 executions in the United States, but
only 46 executions in 2010. While 34 states and the federal government
allow capital punishment, only 12 states actually carried out an
execution in 2010 (Dieter, 2011).
Tasks:
In this assignment, you will discuss the death penalty in your own state.
Write a 2- to 3-page paper discussing the following questions:
Does your home state allow the death penalty? If so, please give some
examples of aggravating and mitigating factors that your state
recognizes. If your state does not allow the death penalty, discuss the
history of the death penalty in your state and what the state offers in the
alternative.
Describe whether your state's policy has had any impact on crime.
Include in your discussion the crime rates in comparison to the number
of executions. Do you agree or disagree with your state's policy
regarding the death penalty?
Speculate on what you think the future holds for the death penalty in the
United States. Consider the recent Supreme Court's decisions, the groups
calling for the end of capital punishment, the cost of executions, and any
other factors that may influence the future. Explain your conclusions.

Rehabilitation and Community Corrections
For more classes visit
www.snaptutorial.com
One of the problems that you will face in the real world is that of public
perception of rehabilitation and community corrections programs.
Intermediate sanctions are mechanisms and programs that relate to the
supervision of criminal offenders not under strict confinement or
incarceration. Gaining support from the public for these programs
requires well-documented presentations that are accessible to general
audiences and can drive powerful support and ultimately funding for
rehabilitation and community corrections programs.
Instructions:
You have been granted an internship at the Centervale Corrections
Authority. Your first task is to research and draft a presentation that will
be used to educate citizens and to gain support for funding rehabilitation
and intermediate sanctions, better known as community corrections
programs.
In order to make this accessible for long-term use, you are instructed to
create a presentation that will not only educate the local citizens but
build their understanding of the benefits of rehabilitation and ultimately
gain support for community corrections programs in Centervale. Keep in
mind that you are soliciting the support of the citizens and that you seek
their suggestions and recommendations.
Some of the rehabilitation and community corrections issues you will
examine include rehabilitation issues associated with gender, culture,
race, ethnicity, gang activity, and criminal organizations within the
prison system. You will recommend rehabilitation and community
corrections programs that will improve the success rate for rehabilitation
in Centervale's prison populations. Your presentation will be an 8- to 10-
slide Microsoft PowerPoint presentation with script and will include the
following:
Analyze the role of rehabilitation in corrections and communicate in a
manner that can be understood by the citizens of Centervale.
Analyze research regarding rehabilitation in corrections and support
your presentation with empirical research.
Examine the difficulty of implementing rehabilitation programs in the
correctional environment and include expected timelines, outcomes, and
assessments.
Examine the rehabilitation issues associated with gender, culture, race,
ethnicity, gang activity, and criminal organizations within prison
systems.
Recommend rehabilitation and community corrections programs that
will improve the success rate for rehabilitation in Centervale's prison
populations and include opportunities to solicit citizens' suggestions and
recommendations for community corrections to gain their support and
associated funding.
Note: Remember to add detailed speaker notes for each slide of the
presentation.
