Lesson 1IntermediateBusiness English IVPresent Simple and Continuous
ContentsReview of present simple and continuous.
Vocabulary of companies and hierarchies.
Expressions used to describe one’s position in a company.ObjectivesBy the end of this lesson you: Will distinguish the use of present simple from that of present continuous.
Will be able to use the present simple and present continuous in order to explain the way in which different types of companies organize themselves.
Will create a diagram in order to explain the hierarchical structure in a company.
Will analyze a fictional situation and will report your conclusions.Lesson 1 Company StructureAs you know, each company has its own way to organize its staff structure. For some of them the secret of their success relies in a steep hierarchy where managers and employees work together under a series of well-known standardised processes. In the one hand, they provide a feeling of continuity and stability for both customers and shareholders. On the other hand, however, there are companies where flexibility is the rule. There are no strict dressing codes, working schedules can shift from one month to the other, and even the presence of steep hierarchical structures is not so evident. Which one is the best? What advantages can they provide not only to their employees but to the customers? Let’s read a brief article that deals with hierarchies in Japan:
Lesson 1 Company StructureNow that you have finished reading, go to the forum section and answer in a 50-60 words composition the following question:What kind of staff organization promotes collaboration and productivity among its members? Why?Remember that in your answer you must consider your classmates’ opinions. It is important that in your opinion you use some of the following vocabulary: a) Crucialb) Corporate culturec) Global marketd) Structured plane) Efficiency levelsf) Dutiesg) Bureaucratic
Lesson 1 Company StructureGrammar sectionAs you know, the English language has two types of present: Present simple and continuous. Each one of them is going to be used in very specific situations. Look at the following sentences and try to infer their rules:Present simple.a) Corporate culture brings new developments every year.b) Corruption and bureaucracy affect 95 per cent of the economy. c) Tangible assets are an important part in your business. Present continuous.a) At the moment the HR department is recruiting people with MBA’sb) They are setting up a new office in Bostonc) Both entities are merging into a new company that will star operations next month.
Lesson 1 Present simple and Continuous. If you noticed, the present simple has the following rules:a) It is used to express regular and general processes. The CEO of the company gives a presentation every month. b) It is used to express facts that will not change.By far, the USA is the richest country in North America.c) It is used with some of these key words:A week, a month, always, never, sometimes, usually, rarely, ever. The present continuous has the following rules:a) It is used to talk about things that are happening at the moment. We are selling an average of 50,000 units. b) It is used to talk about temporary situations. This week they are changing their operating system.c) It can be used to talk about future situations.Next month my boss is taking all of us for a training session.
Lesson 1 Now that we have studied the differences between present simple and present continuous, we are going to practice them in different exercises. In this first activity, we are going to listen to an interview based on the topics of schools, students, managers, and the role of continuous development after graduating. 1.- Before listening to the radio interview visit the following website: http://www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/About/Experiential_Learning.aspx2.-Once you have checked the information in this web page, proceed to answer in your own words the following questions:What is the main objective of the Kellogg School of Management? What is the main focus of the Experiential Learning approach at Kellogg?3.-Listen to the interview and answer the following questions: a) Mention two challenges that Kellogg is facing with its students.b) Mention two changes that Kellogg has done to its courses.c) According to Chris Scott, what is the main idea behind the concept of “Marketing Rebranding”?
Lesson 1 Exercises.Role Play ActivityNow, imagine that you are in charge of the Human Resources department in a big company. In the box below you have both a fictional profile of the company, and also, one diagram of the staff structure. In this activity you have first to analyze the diagram of the company. Once you have done this write a 50-60 word composition where you make sure to give as many details of the company, your duties and responsibilities. The phrases that will help you to do this are: My job entails/ involves This company deals with…I’m responsible for… This is a manufacturing company…I work for/ under… Our target customers are…I’m in charge of… Our main market is…
