LESSON-11
Nature Of Matter
What do we learn?
✓ What is matter
✓ Characteristics of matter
✓ Different states of matter
✓ Types of change in state of matter
✓ Knowledge about mass,density,pressure,
sublimation, buoyancy
• The objects or materials we use in our day-to day life is called as Matter
• Even the materials we use doesn't look similar but few characteristics of
them will be similar
We can observe that materials are in different forms in their shape, color,
brightness, solubility
Experiment
•Take some chalk powder. Dip your finger in it and sprinkle slowly over
a plane glass.
•Observe these minute pieces carefully through a convex lens.
▪ Scientifically materials are called as Matter
▪ Matter is made up of small particles
▪ The smallest piece of matter is called as Particle
▪ Particles present in matter are invisible
▪ Hence visible matter consists of invisible particles
•According to John Dalton’s theory, Elements are
made of extremely small particles called atoms.
•Atoms cannot be subdivided, created or destroyed.
Matter
•The material which occupies space and possesses mass is called Matter.
Solid Liquid Gas
Properties of matter
1. Matter Occupies Space
Air is a matter. Air occupies
space in container
2.Matter has Mass
Matter is a total sum of many particles. It has mass. Matter
is made up of small particles. Total number of particles in a
matter depends upon its weight. The material which
occupies space and possesses mass is called Matter.
States of Matter
Solid Liquid Gas
There are three types of states of matter
•Solid objects have a specific size and shape.
•Solid materials can be poured into a pile.
SOLIDS
Example : stone, iron etc
•Particles can slide over each other and move freely within a given frame.
•They have no specific shape.
Liquids
Example : water, milk etc
Gases
•Gases have no specific shape and size.
•Gas particles move independently.
Example : air, smoke etc
