Birds are characterized by feathers, wings, a beak or bill, laying eggs, a lightweight skeleton, and molting. Feathers are made of keratin and have several functions, including flight, insulation, incubation, courtship, and waterproofing. There are two main types of feathers - pennaceous feathers which form the wings and tails and provide lift, and plumulaceous feathers which are wispy and insulative. Birds have strong flight muscles and either monogamous or polygamous reproductive behaviors, where they build nests and care for altricial or precocial offspring after laying clutches of eggs.
