This document summarizes the classification of pesticides. Pesticides can be classified in several ways, most commonly by their target pest, mode of entry into the pest, mode of action for controlling the pest, chemical structure, application method, and application timing. By target, pesticides are grouped as herbicides, insecticides, bactericides, fungicides, and miticides. By mode of entry, they are stomach or contact poisons. By mode of action, they are nerve poisons, muscle poisons, or repellents. By chemical composition, classifications include organochlorines, organophosphorus, and carbamates.
