Responding to briefs
Developing a systematic approach to client briefs
A systematic approach
 In the exam, you will be asked about the process of
approaching briefs, from the initial response right
through to the end of pre-production
 You have to know exactly what tools are at your
disposal, and what the advantages and
disadvantages of each are
Different tools
 Mind mapping – Used during the initial phase of
planning a project. Thoughts and ideas can be linked
together off a central hub
 The lines gradually break down the detail of the idea to
“flesh it out”
Different tools
 Moodboard – A collection of images, materials, words,
fonts and objects used to create a “feel” for a project
 Also used to show possible colour schemes
Different tools
 Blue-sky thinking– A meeting
where the brief is read, and
any thoughts, questions,
words, colours, associations
are written down.
 No idea is ever discounted or
criticised at this stage
Different tools
 SWOT analysis–
Strengths,
weaknesses,
opportunities, threats
(sometimes called
the “Boston
Consulting Matrix”
model)
 Used to reduce a
large number of
initial ideas down to
the best solutions
