Research
• Audience Research
• I feel my audience reach was good as it really helped me to capture the thinking and feelings
of my product so I can relate better to them. The survey got 100 response with the majority
being my age range so I felt like I was in the best position to make this video with the
audience in mind.
• Contextual Research (York & Mediale)
• The York aspect of this section wasn’t done very well but I didn’t really effect the overall
impact of my video as I felt commutable proceeding with this production having lived in York
for many years and knowing what’s it all about. The Mediale aspect on the other had was very
beneficial as it helped me to understand what they were actually asking us to do. This was
because I wasn’t 100% sure on what they were wanting in terms of production other than
showing that relation ship to York. Having the brief in writing and some of their information
was very beneficial as it allowed me to think more deeply about what I wanted to make and
how it related the brief.
• Existing Products Research
• I feel like this research was the best as it related exactly to what I wanted to create and how
to do it. I wanted to emulate a lot of the effects that were in the music videos and this way I
could research them and why they were put in there to give me a better undressing of where
to put them in my video and what they represent. I looked at two effect heavy videos and one
beautifully shot video. This gave me a great mix of what I wanted to create and meant I had a
broader of view when it came to the key points of the video.
• Production Research
• This was probably the weakest part of my research as I didn’t use any of it. I feel like I chose
the wrong type of editing style of a music video as they aren’t typically a narrative and I
wasn’t planning on creating one. It was still great practise for the my future production so it
wasn’t a total waste of time but in the context of this video it was. Next time I would think
about what production research I needed and would actually use like lighting techniques or
effect creations
Planning
• Idea Development
• I felt like I had 3 solid ideas that would have each made a really good video.
The documentary would not have been as successful as I have never made
one so I would need a lot of research into the whole craft of creating one. This
would have made the research and planning a long and ruling task that I
didn’t want to take. This is the same for the experimental films. I feel like I
could create something decent with the skills I have but I felt like the music
video was a more suitable choice. Going into detail about the three ideas
made me make a better informed choice about what I want to do for this
project
• Set Layouts
• This section helped out a lot in the pre visualisation stage of the planning as it
could arrange my sets in powerpoint and see how’d they look. My sets went
through a lot of changes from the finished powerpoint but it all gave me a
better idea of what it’ll look like. I used a similar tool to do this on set so that
really helped me before I spent ages setting them up.
• Structural Breakdown and Story Boards
• This part really helped me when it came to dividing my time and seeing what
I needed to shoot in each location. It also helped with the finalising my plans
as I could see if there were any gaps in the video and fill them with content.
This worked very well and proved beneficial in the planning and production
stages as it gave an overview of what I was making and the story boards
helped me visualise them better. One weakness of the breakdowns and
storyboards was that they weren’t detailed so I had to think of a lot of the
details on the spot when shooting
• Props and Equipment Breakdown
• This part was very helpful as it meant I could get an overview of the scale of
my production and pull it back a lot after seeing the final price. I ended up
buying the backdrop and some gels but the rest was easily cut from the
budget by changing my locations and what I wanted to do. I would say this
was a very important as it meant I didn’t spend all my money needlessly.
Technical Qualities - production
I shot this video with the intention to use as many effects as I could to make it more visually
interesting. This meant I only needed to focus on a few set pieces in order to add something other
than effects. I bought a black photography sheet and got some lights from college to set up my
main piece which didn’t take long after a day worth of experimenting and planning my lights. I also
reused the same scene without the black sheet and my desk re set back up for another of the set
pieces. This made it so much easier as all my kit was in 1 room for two very different shots and the
set up for the desk shot was relatively easy for this I used one low down white light and one up top
red light and killed any other lights in the room. I used the light from my monitors as a sort of back
light and too add some visuals as I had an FL Studio document open and playing in the back ground.
The time-lapse of the set up is on the website. The field shots were the easiest as they didn’t
require any lights or prior setup. I found a bench that had the minster behind me and just filmed on
that.
As I was shooting alone I had to bring back my idea a lot to something feasible. This meant no
dynamic camera movements and no focus shifts and no moving lights . It was also difficult to get
focus effectively as I wasn’t stood in frame to use auto focus. This is when I started to use an old
Nicholas Cage Christmas tree topper on a brush and put it in frame where I would be. This made it
so much easier to get focus on a black background as it was practically a face the camera could lock
on too
Technical Qualities – editing/post
A lot of the value in the production came from the effects I did. This was the finished timeline the
blue clips are from the principle photography, the red clips are linked after effect compositions and
the purple are the colour correction/grading and the effects I used. This includes any PiP (picture in
picture) pictures, the glitch transitions, glitch overlays, text and PiP overlays
This title overlay was
made in photoshop
with a custom font
from DaFont. I feel like
the colours and font
work nicely together
for the overall video. I
don’t like the fact the
outer text is so small
but on a big screen it
doest really matter
I used these 808 makers to
add some visual oomph for
when the 808 bass comes in.
I also added a colour shift
glitch to it as it is a very
electronic sounding bass. I
like the simplicity of it and
the effectiveness of taking
away from my bad acting.
Im not a big fan of the black
background which can be
seen better later on in the
video but it hasn't
completely ruined it
This insert was inspired by
what Mattias Larsson did in
his music videos with Aries.
The text is moving and the
pictures are changing. It works
well as it comes after a long
section of just the actor and
mixes things up. I like how all
the elements come together
nicely to create such a visual
but I feel like its a bit too long
and the Pokemon picture
flashes too quickly.
This insert was also inspired
by what Mattias Larsson did in
his music videos with Aries.
The text is revealed as it is
said in the song. I also reused
the Pokemon theme from
earlier in the song. This
picture is just another visual
that’s adds the overall
aesthetic. I really like this
insert as it is simple yet
effective in creating interest
visually. On thing I’m not too
happy with is that it is very
short, spanning only 2
seconds
These two clips came from the
same scene in which it is just
the actor. I decided to change
the aspect ratio just to add a
bit of something to it as on its
own it was quite
uninteresting. I like this as it
changes the feel of the scene
slightly and makes it a bit
more interesting. One thing
I’m not too happy with is how
small the clip is in the first
picture. There was reasoning
behind it but i’m not too sure
and it looks like I messed up.
I added this light effect to cover up the mess
up of the colour grade I did on this clip that I
couldn’t resolve. This was due to render
issues so I had to export as pictures and
move them individually, I did this when it
had already be coloured before I changed
the over-all colour. I choice this effect to
cover it up as it works nicely to give the
impression of a light leak that would change
the colour anyway. I also like it as it is a great
addition to the cut out drop I have
connecting theses scenes
Technical Qualities – editing/post cont.
This clone effect was thought
about on set and I feel like it
works really well as its add
some visual interest and some
creative flair that is quite
memorable. This effect worked
well in the visuals case but the
singing didn’t get lined up
enough so it kinda looks out of
place.
This effect was a
great transition into
the next shot and a
new aspect ratio as I
compiled a light leak,
maximum shake and
distortion so that the
whole image is
mixed up. This
looked amazing and
really helped with
the awkward cut I
had to deal with
This shot was filmed in 16:9
but cropped to 4:3 as too
match the tone of the music
which changed for this bit. I
also lowered the contrast
and saturation to match it as
well. I am pleased with how
this came out the addition of
the off pink text at the end
really tied it together. I also
added an effect called Jump
Cut Distortion which
separated out the colours
ever so slightly to give that
vintage look
This effect was thought of
whilst shooting a close up. It
involved getting my ace into
the screen up close then
adding 3 tear drops on the
bass hits. I took inspiration
again from Aries music video
by Mattias Larsson. This
worked really well to break
up the pure actor no visuals
bit of the scene. I don’t like
that the clip has a bit of
movement in the beginning
but that can’t be helped and
doesn’t effect it too much
This effect was thought of
whilst editing to break up the
long ending bit. It is inspired
by HUMBLE by Kendrick
Lamar and works really well
in this scene. This is because
the vocals are echoed and it
sounds like 2 people are
singing and the lip sync fits
really well so it all comes
together really well. I added
the border for a bit of visuals
other than the singing so
there is something else to
look at
Audience Appeal
• How have you appealed to your target audience? – I have appealed to
my target demographic (16 - 25) by creating a video that introduces a
new hip hop artist with a creative and enjoyable music video. I have
used a lot visually interesting and dynamic effects to entertain and
keep the interest of the viewer so they listen to the whole song and
become a fan of the singer.
• I have appealed to a York audience as the music artist is form York and
the minster is seen in the background of on of the main shots. I have
also include the location of the studio I shot in which was York.
• A lot of people in audience research had said they listen and have
discovered new artists through music videos so I believe this is a great
way of that happening.
Time Management
• Did you manage your time well?
• My time management throughout this project has been great. I stuck to my
schedule that I made in the proposal document and it was very helpful.
• Did you complete your project on time or would your production have improved
with additional time? What would you have done if you had more time?
• With more time I would have reshot all my footage with the intention of making
it less grainy and dark. This would massively improve the quality and made it
much easier to edit as I wouldn’t have to constantly increase and decrease the
brightness to see what I am doing.
1st Music Video comparison
Compared to my last my last music video I feel like I have improved a lot. The first one was a
focused on the narrative that didn’t play out too well. It also wasn’t very effect heavy either, it
was just two characters not doing much. I liked the colour and smoothness of the first one I
did. I think this is because I had actors to do the acting work and I could just focus on the
camera where as on this shoot it was all just me so I couldn’t do anything visually interesting. I
think I brought back the boringness of this production with the intensive editing I did. The
acting and cinematography was definitely best in the first one I did where as the editing in this
one is superior.
For my FMP this year I want to combine both of the factors that make them each stand out to
create the best possible work I can. It will be a music video so both of these projects were
very helpful in homing my skills and gives me the ability to create something that looks
beautiful and has a lot of well thought out and creative edits

For my FMP this year I want to combine both of the factors that make them each stand out to create the best possible work I can. It will be a music video so both of these projects were very helpful in homing my skills and gives me the ability to create something that looks beautiful and has a lot of well thought out and creative edits
