Cloud computing
 Applications and computing resources are
provided to users as a service through the
Internet (i.e., “the cloud”), similar to utilities
    like electricity
Cloud computing
 ATTRIBUTES OF CLOUD COMPUTING
 Massive resources at its disposal and supports several users
        simultaneously
 Supports on-demand scalability of users’ computational needs
 Offers ubiquitous access; stored data and applications are
accessible by authorized users anywhere at anytime
 Facilitates data sharing, enterprise wide data analysis, and
        collaboration
 Are generally self-healing and can self-reconfigure providing
continuous availability in case of failure of its computing
        resources
 Offers enhanced user experience via a simplified Web browser
        user interface
 SOFTWARE AS A SERVICE (SaaS)
 Web mail, Google Apps, Salesforce.com CRM, Quicken Online
Accounting, NetSuite’s Business Software Suite, Sun Java
Communications Suite, and Paychex payroll management
      system
 PLATFORM AS A SERVICE (PaaS)
 Google App Engine, Microsoft Azure, Amazon.com’s Web
Services, and Sun Microsystems NetBeans IDE
 INFRASTRUCTURE AS A SERVICE (IaaS)
 Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), GoGrid, and FlexiScale
 OTHER INTERNET-BASED SERVICES (IBS)
 Storage, middleware, collaboration, and database capabilities
 Virtual Private or External Private Clouds
 private cloud existing within a shared or public
     cloud
 Vertical Cloud or Community Clouds
 optimized for use by a particular industry sector or
a group of users meeting their specific
requirements to address issues that are crucial to
     them
 Hybrid Clouds
 a combination of two or more of the previously
     mentioned cloud models
 BENEFITS OF CLOUD COMPUTING
 Lower operational/service cost to users; users pay for what
        they use
 On-demand scalability to meet peak and uncertain
        computing demands
 Access to applications from anywhere at anytime
 Shared access to data/application supporting
        collaboration and teamwork
 Ease of and quicker application deployment
 Freedom from being tied to a single computer
 Increased data safety than most businesses can offer and
manage in their own on-premises IT systems
     Help companies grow
 LIMITATIONS OF CLOUD COMPUTING
 The need for a constant, high-speed network access
        to connect to clouds
 The possibility of a slow response at times due to
increased traffic on the network or higher load on the
        computers in the cloud
 The security of the data on external clouds
 Risks of unauthorized access to users’ data; the loss of
data due to cloud failure (despite replication across
        multiple machines)
 Concerns regarding reliability and continued
availability of services by cloud providers
