Student Assessed Coursework – Task 2

                              Coastal Fieldwork Folio

STUDENT:
    _____________________________________________________

AREA OF STUDY: Characteristics of Natural Environments - Coasts

DUE DATE: Friday 24th April, 2009

FORMAT: Folio of Geography Tasks

OUTCOME ASSESSED: Part of Outcome 1 and Outcome 2

 Outcome 1
On completion of this unit the student should be able to describe the geographic
characteristics of coasts and explain how they are developed by natural processes.

 Outcome 2
On completion of this unit the student should be able to analyse and explain the changes
in natural environments due to natural processes and human activity.

YOUR TASK

This task is a folio of exercises, and requires you to hand in a number of activities associated with
the fieldwork conducted on our coastal fieldtrip. Some tasks may required you to complete further
research using the links provided on the blog (becnicholas.edublogs.org). These tasks must all
be submitted on the due date.

Task 1 – Completed Fieldwork Booklet

You are required to submit your fieldwork booklet. Go through and complete all tasks to the best
of your ability. Using photos, re-sketch your fieldwork sketches and annotate in as much detail as
possible.

26/03//09 Rebecca Nicholas
Task 2 – Google Map

You are required to create a Google Map of our coastal field trip. Your map must display
the following information:

Stop 1 – Point Lonsdale
• What type of coast is this?
• What were the major natural processes occurring at this beach?
• What type of waves were occurring at the beach? Provide detailed characteristics.
• What natural landforms exist at Point Londsdale? How were they formed?
• Include photos and diagrams in each of your explanations.

Stop 2 – Collendina
• What type of coast is this?
• What was the main type of natural landform at Collendina? How did it form?
• Draw or annotate a dune profile to describe the changing nature of vegetation on the dune
  system.
• What role do sand dunes play in building up the beach?
• Include photos and diagrams in each of your explanations.

Stop 3 – Ocean Grove
• What type of coast is this?
• What were the major natural processes occurring at this beach?
• What type of waves were occurring at the beach? Provide detailed characteristics.
• Why were the waves different to those at Point Lonsdale?
• Include photos and diagrams in each of your explanations.

Stop 4 – Barwon Heads
• What type of coast is this?
• What were the major natural processes occurring at this beach?
• What types of waves were occurring at this beach? Provide detailed characteristics.
• What natural landforms exist at Barwon Heads? How were they formed?
• Include photos and diagrams in each of your explanations.

Instructions on how to create a Google Map, add information and images can be found on my
blog (becnicholas.edublogs.org). To submit this task you will need to send me the link for your
Google My Map via Studywiz.

Task 3 – Human Impacts

Create an iMovie or Keynote presentation that provides an overview of the human impacts and
how they are being reduced in the Northshore Beach area. You will need to consider the
following:

• What are the impacts that you observed at each of the beaches?
• Why would these impacts be occurring?
• What can be done or should be done to reduce or minimize the negative impacts on the beach
26/03//09 Rebecca Nicholas
area? You will need to include as much detail as possible in this section. Consider impacts
such as housing developments, the clearing and development on foredunes, litter, tourism,
    groynes, beach nourishment etc.

The aim of the iMovie or Keynote is to educate the public, as well as provide an overview on what
is being done at these beaches to reduce these impacts.

Task 4 – Solving Coastal Issues

Coastal areas are very popular for people to live, but also become major areas of development.
You are required to choose one of the following recent coastal environment issues. Choose the
point of view of two of the stakeholders, and present their argument as either a 500 word feature
article for a local newspaper, an interview on iMovie or a detailed cartoon on Comic Life. In your
argument consider:

• What is the stakeholders argument?
• Why do they have this argument?
• What impact will this development have (both positive and negative) on the coastal
  environment?

Possible Issues Could include:

• The Barwon Heads Bridge
• The Triangle Development at St Kilda
• The new Frankston Marina
• Dredging in Port Phillip Bay

    Key Skills:

    • Conduct fieldwork at a local site and collect data
    • Process and represent fieldwork data related to coasts and change using a variety of
      geographic techniques and media.
    • Describe and analyse data about changes to natural environments produced by the
interaction between natural processes and human activity
    • Explain how natural processes and their interaction with human activity may alter natural
      environments
    • Identify and describe the geographic characteristics of selected natural environments in
      different locations
    • Analyse and explain data about the geographic characteristics of natural environments
produced by the interaction of natural processes
