CodeRED Case Study
About Code Red
CodeRED is a bi-annual Hackathon conducted by University of Hous-
ton. This was the second edition of the Hackathon, the first one was
conducted in the summer. This second edition was slated to be much
larger and the scale attracted sponsorship from the likes of Pros.com,
Microsoft, BlueChasm, Chevron, SSL.com and many more.
The HackerEarth Sprint advantage
HackerEarth Sprint’s value proposition is simple- to simplify and opti-
mise the registration, communication, submissions and evaluations
processes of a hackathon. It does so in the following ways-
Dedicated page hosted on HackerEarth- This page allows participants
to register prior to the Hackathon, and organizers can use this page to
keep registered participants updated with various aspects of the hack-
athon, like rules, FAQs, Prizes and announcements
https://codered.hackerearth.com/
Submissions- Participants can easily submit their hacks through the
submission page, that collects all relevant information like source code,
screenshots, demo etc.
Organized submissions data- All submissions are available to organizers
in a clear and usable format and can be exported in a spreadsheet
format, for offline use.
Easy evaluation- You can award the prizes to each candidate in an easy
check box manner, based on their evaluation.
Seamless communication- The HackerEarth Sprint tool has a built in dis-
cussion form, to allow candidates communicate with each other and to
keep them updated during the hackathon.
With any hackathon which has over
a 100 participants, collecting sub-
missions, shortlisting and evalua-
tion becomes a constraint. Submis-
sions data is unorganized and bring-
ing them together on one platform
is a task in itself. This affects the
quality of the hackathon in three
ways-
It becomes too time consuming to
collect all the hacks submitted by
the participating teams. Manual
process also adds to overall chaos.
Evaluation is based on the oratory
and presentation skills of the partic-
ipants and less so on the coding
ability of the team.
It becomes difficult to gauge how
much of the hack was performed at
the Hackathon itself, as the source
code is not submitted for evaluation
in most hackathons
The CodeRED organizers chose
HackerEarth Sprint as the hack-
athon management tool to collect
submissions and conduct evalua-
tion.
The Problem Statement
University of Houston fall hackathon, CodeRED Liftoff successfully conducted
it’s biggest hackathon yet, using HackerEarth Sprint. Over 800 people attend-
ed the event, and over 300 people participated in the 24 hour hackathon.
The entire process of submission and judging was seamlessly managed using
HackerEarth Sprint.
The Benefit
The Hackathon organizers’ ease in using the product validates it like no other. Aaron Dancer, the organizer of the
CodeRED Hackathon said this about HackerEarth Sprint-
"HackerEarth Sprint is a fantastic tool for hackathon organizers. It seriously streamlines many event logistics and is
much more functional than similar solutions. HackerEarth Sprint seriously helped reduce the amount of complexity
in running our event. It took all of the functionality we needed, and bundled it into an easy to use solution."
