Problem of Practice
bit.ly/a11yBLC17
The amount of online content that is created and shared
continues to grow, but there remain significant access gaps
for learners with disabilities. This could potentially limit
participation and engagement.
What are some ways that we can be proactive as creators
and curators of online content?

Not all content is created equal. Which platforms and courses offer
accessible content? What happens when they do or don’t? How can
we speak up?

Thoughts on Accessibility from Tech Leaders
“For us, we believe very deeply that accessibility is a human right. And we try very hard to make
all of our products accessible for everyone because of that. And so it's a basic value. Think back
to how Apple was founded, and it's still the case today, we make tools for people to do
incredible things and change the world with them. And that's everybody, not a particular
group of people.” - Tim Cook, CEO of Apple
“In order to truly reduce the unemployment rate for people with disabilities, we must come
together and reduce barriers in education, training, hiring and the workplace.” - Megan
Lawrence, Accessibility Technical Evangelist, Microsoft
“One of Google's core principles is ‘Focus on the user and all else will follow.’ The Google User
Experience (UX) team believes that usability and accessibility go together. We integrate
accessible design thinking throughout the entire product development cycle.” - Google

The Deaf Lens: Challenging
Existing Designs
bit.ly/a11yBLC17
Christine Sun Kim, sound artist
As a Deaf person living in a world of
sound, it's as if I was living in a foreign
country, blindly following its rules,
customs, behaviors and norms without
ever questioning them. So how is it that I
understand sound? Well, I watch how
people behave and respond to sound.
You people are like my loudspeakers,
and amplify sound. I learn and mirror
that behavior.
- Christine Sun Kim, The enchanting
music of sign language. TED talk.
bit.ly/a11yBLC17
Wayne Betts, Jr., co-founder of Convo
“Film language had a box around it, and
I felt trapped in this box. I struggled to
get out of the box by rearranging the
rules. Then I realized I should just put
the box aside. This box had a set of rules
developed over time. And everybody else
worked with sound.”
- Wayne Betts, Jr, The Deaf Lens.

Rhianon’s Tips to Plan for Access and UDL
● Do a survey among student and staff that may help you anticipate
learning needs.
● Create course materials that follow clear structure.
● Have clearly defined objectives and goals.
● Evaluate the accessibility of your resources.
● Choose tools that have multiple options for flexibility.
● Develop a support network with other educators to assist you.

Create a 20 second video that answers the
question:
What do I need to be a
successful learner?
bit.ly/a11yBLC17
Instructions
1. Create a 20 second video on your chosen platform that answers the
question: What do I need to be a successful learner?
○ Don’t just tell us - show us!
2. Caption your video using bit.ly/CCworkflows as a guide. Choose from
one of three options:
○ YouTube (computer only)
○ Google Drive (computer only)
○ Apple Clips (iOS only)
3. Share this video on our Padlet with your name and the link to the
video (YouTube, Google Drive, Dropbox).
○ Share on Twitter using hashtags #a11yBLC17 and #BLC17; if you made a video using
Apple Clips, also use the hashtag #ClassroomClips
