The Seventh-day Adventist movement originated from the Millerite movement in the 1840s. William Miller, a Baptist preacher, predicted that Christ would return in 1843 based on his reading of the Bible. When Christ did not return on that date, in what became known as the "Great Disappointment," many Millerites lost faith or joined other denominations. However, some Millerites continued to study prophetic interpretations and formed the Seventh-day Adventist Church, observing the Sabbath on the seventh day in keeping with the Bible.
