Findings from tongue diagnosis using Toyohari Presentation 07/03/2009
Structure A) Basic pointers for realising tongue diagnosis and standardising results. B) Additional findings regarding tongue changes during Toyohari treatment. C) Research and comparision between Chinese and Toyohari tongue diagnostic models.
Basics for obtaining favorable results in tongue diagnosis The following factors may influence the results:
Movement of the tongue Posture of the patient Light and distance Medications, e.g. antibiotics
Tense movement
Relaxed movement
Sitting
Lying down
Light
Distance
Antibiotics
Coating
Integrating tongue diagnosis in Toyohari treatment Obtain information concerning the patient´s vitality before and after treatment. The method employed can be similar to pulse quality or certain types of abdominal diagnosis.
In Toyohari treatment, valuation between kyo (deficiency) and jitsu (excess) is used: As the principal method for assessing the strength of the patient´s constitution, energy level and pathogenic ki.
Different kinds of diagnosis are used for this valuation: Pulse diagnosis Abdominal diagnosis Looking and hearing diagnosis Meridian and tissue exploration
Tongue diagnosis can be useful for measuring patient vitality Kyo (deficiency) and jistu (excess) as a constitutional assessment is visible on the tongue.
The basic skills for valuing kyo and jitsu on the tongue Color vitality of tongue Lustre of tongue Texture of tongue tissue
Color vitality of tongue Vital colors, lustrous Pale and greyish Jitsu Kyo
Lustre of tongue Lustrous Lacking lustre Jitsu Kyo
Texture of tongue tissue Resiliency Depression Fullness Flaccidity, weakness Jitsu Kyo

Comparison of Chinese tongue diagnostic models with a tongue model proposed by the Toyohari Association. Which of these models would probably be most useful for the Toyohari style?
Chinese Models
Toyohari Model
Findings in Lung area using the Chinese diagnostic model two parallel fissures in the Lung area contracted front third of the tongue swelling in the front third of the tongue fissures in the Chinese Lung area depth in the front third of the tongue
Findings in Lung area using the Toyohari diagnostic model irregular right border rolled right border flaccid right border swollen right border clear right border tooth marks on right side retracted right side right side more swollen than left fissures on the right border
2 0 9 46 Lung – Liver control (57) 1 0 1 1 Spleen – Liver control (3) 5 0 4 4 Heart – Kidney control (13) 2 6 2 24 Liver – Spleen control (34) 0 1 17 36 Liver – Lung control (54) 4 4 15 47 Kidney (70) No signs at all in either area Only tongue signs in the Chinese Lung area Only tongue signs on the right side of the tongue Toyohari Lung area Tongue signs in Chinese Lung area and Toyohari Lung area right side, at the same time Sho
Conclusion There is a higher frequency of findings on the right side of the tongue in the Toyohari Lung area than in the Chinese location. Thus, the Toyohari model would probably be more useful than the Chinese tongue diagnosis.
The research is still going on … There are specific findings for each meridian. However, is it really possible to define a single tongue pattern for each Sho?
This is a difficult question and not one easy to answer.
