Seperating Quotations
Start Lesson
Comma Rule 5
 Use a comma to separate a quotation from
the rest of a sentence. Keep the comma
outside the quotation marks if you have
already introduced the speaker and are
about to write their quote. Keep the comma
inside of the quotation marks if you write
their quote before you introduce them.
I think i’ve got itI need an example
Examples
1. Samantha said, “Why don’t you guys
come and hang out with us instead?”
2. “Never let anyone bring you down, ”
my father said.
3. The boy stated, “I never thought I
would like baseball but I do.”
More help please! Now I get it!

The first situation that will call for a comma is when
you are about to quote what someone said. For
example…
Samantha said, “Why don’t you guys come and hang
out with us instead?”
 See how the comma comes before the quote? Make
sure to keep the comma outside of the quotation
marks.
Next
The second situation that will call for a comma is when
you are done quoting what someone said, but have not
introduced them yet. For example…
“Never let anyone bring you down, ” my father said.
 See how the comma comes after the quote? Make
sure to keep the comma inside of the quotation
marks.
