1Kings 8: 61
And may your hearts be fully committed to the Lord our
God, to live by his decrees and obey his commands, as
at this time.”
TALK ON COMMITMENT
St. Xavier’s Prayer Group
Friday, 14th July, 2023.
Timing: 7pm
COMMITMENT
What is Commitment?
What is Commitment?
• Commitment can be defined as the decision to do what needs to be
done, whatever the cost.
• In simplest terms, a commitment is "something pledged.“
• Commitment also includes the responsibility to practice specific
activities.
• Commitment is a way of the heart expressing itself in a way of life.
COMMITMENT starts with communication and ends in action.
Biblical Commitment
• Total commitment is the foundation of our relationship with God.
(Ps 31:5; Rom 5:11; 2 Cor 5:17-21)
• God has personally called every Christian to follow His call in a
lifetime of faithful service. (Jo 10:27-28; Eph 5:2; Rev 2:10)
• Love inspires our Christian commitment, and to have this kind of
commitment we also need faith. (Jo 14:15; Heb 11:6)
THE CALL FOR COMMITMENT
• First of all, commitment demands a choice. (1 Ki 18:21; Lk 9:23)
Commitment definitely limits choices because it is exclusive.
Commitment builds up faith and develops character. It is a spiritual
discipline requiring time, work and determination.
DENY SELF
• Self-life manifests itself in self-indulgence, self-love, self-will, self-
seeking, self-pride. (Mat 16:25-26)
• To one person, self may be intellectual pride; to another it may be
pleasure; for another, business or family. (Mat 19:27-30)
• To deny self means to surrender yourself completely and
unconditionally to Jesus Christ. (Phil 3:7-10)
HOW STRONG IS OUR
COMMITMENT TO GOD?
• Are we pursuing an Intimate Relationship With God Above all Else?
Serving Christ With all our Time, Abilities and Energy.
Delighting in God’s goodness and in His ability to meet all our needs.
Letting God take and use our life in whatever way will please Him
most.
The Marks of a Committed Christian
• To live for Glory of God: The very purpose for which we exist is to
give glory to God, so this is the first mark of a committed Christian.
We glorify God when we in any way praise or acknowledge or
experience or display His attributes. (Isa 43:7; Mat 5:16)
The Marks of a Committed Christian
• To live a life of love: Love is how we identify ourselves as Christians.
Christians have a new God-given capacity to love the is a fruit of the
Spirit. We are commanded to love as Jesus loved, loves and the one
who truly loves will have to sacrifice . (Jo 15:15; Gal 5:22; 1 Jo 4:7-8)
The Marks of a Committed Christian
• To live a life of service: God has given gifts to every believer to do the
job God wants done. We are to be faithful in serving fellow believers
and in being a faithful witness for Christ. (Jo 21:15-17; 1 Cor 12:1-11)
The Marks of a Committed Christian
• A life of Loyalty to Jesus Christ: Believers must be willing to give up
that which hinders being faithful to Christ. (Lk 14:25-33; Phil 3:7-8)
Partial Commitment is no Commitment
• God requires of us nothing less than total commitment.
(Lk 14:26-27; Mat 22:37;Rev 14-16)
• There is no way to live the Christian life without total commitment.
(Jas 1:22; 1 Pet 1:15-16; 1 Pet 3:15-16)
• Just because our circumstances change does not mean our
commitment should. (Dan 6:4-11)
• Many of people have made a decision about Christ, but have not
made a commitment to Christ.(1 Jo 2:19)
• You are either committed or you are not committed.
COMMITMENT TO PERSONAL GROWTH: We are called to commit
ourselves as disciples. (Mat 11:29)
COMMITMENT TO MINISTRY: We must commit ourselves to the
ministry of the local church and use the spiritual gifts that God has
given us. (1 Cor 3:9; 2 Cor 4:2; Heb 10:25)
