THEME: DILIGENCE: FOUNDATION FOR ALL-ROUND BLESSING
TOPIC : THE DILIGENT SERVANT/WORKER
TEXTS: Deut 28:1-13; Mat 25: 14 - 30
I. INTRODUCTION
Diligence is the ability to work hard, carefully with focus and persistence, beating all
distractions and with full involvement and enthusiasm. A diligent servant understands
what needs to be done, does it and perseveries to the end. He/ she accepts each task as
a special assignment from the Lord and uses all energies to do it quickly and skillfully.
A diligent servant put his/her heart and soul into the work and takes consistent actions
towards his/her goals. He/she believes that someone or something will suffer if the
work before him/her is not accomplished. It involves rising early, searching out with
painstaking efforts, being earnestly eager and determined, working swiftly, skillfully,
efficiently and pursuing a task promptly and energetically.
II. TRAITS/ FEATURES OF A DILIGENT SERVANT
a) Purposeful
1) Understanding God’s purpose for your life Jer 29:11
Speaks directly to the heart of anyone searching for purpose in life. It assures us that
our lives are not random or aimless. Understanding we have a God given destiny help
us to persevere and stay motivated and seek out the path that leads us closer to the
fulfilment of God’s excellent intentions for our lives.
2) Finding meaning in every season of life Ecc 3:1
Recognising, understanding and accepting the season we are in can help us live more
purposefully and peacefully.
3) Recognising you are made for a purpose Eph 2:10
Our existence is not random but purpose driven. Recognising we are made for a
purpose fosters a sense of responsibility and motivation to fulfill these roles. Living
with this understanding shift our focus from self centered goals to a broader, service
oriented perspective, enhancing both personal fulfilment and well-being.
4) Discovering your God-given purpose Mat 6:33
Living with purpose means aligning our daily actions and decisions with God’s
kingdom and His standard of righteousness. Putting God first reassures us that when
we devote ourselves to a higher purpose, the practical aspects of life will follow suit.
This foster a deeper relationship with God and instill a profound sense of purpose in
every aspect of our lives from mundane to the monumental.
5) Loving God with all your heart, soul and mind. Mat 22: 37-39
Living with purpose is deeply rooted in love - love for God and for others. This
commandment forms the cornerstone of a meaningful life. Loving God will align us
with His will and open us to His transformative power.
Loving others extends His love outward, impacting the world around us. Every
interaction and decision gain purpose.
6) Glorifying God in everything 1Cor 10:31
The verse provides a powerful principle for living a life of purpose, every action
should be done with the intent of glorifying God. It teaches purpose found in
everyday choices we make. By dedicating our mundane tasks to God’s glory, we
infuse our daily routine with eternal significance. Living this way cultivates a sense of
purpose that extends beyond personal achievements focusing on creating a life that
continually reflects God’s love and grace to those around us.
7) Letting your light shine as Christ’s Ambassador Mat 5:16
We are encouraged to live openly and virtuously so that others might be drawn to God
through our actions. This intentional visibility of our faith and values help set a course
for others to follow.
8) Living by faith not by sight 2Cor 5:7
This verse emphasize the importance of faith as the foundation for our actions and
decisions rather than relying solely on what is immediately visible and understood.
Living by faith means trusting in God’s promises and guidance, even when the path is
not clear or the outcome is uncertain. This approach frees us from the limitations of
our own perspective and open us up to divine possibilities. It encourages us to take
bold steps toward our goals and dreams guided by a conviction in things not yet seen
but believed to be true. This deepens our relationship with God and instill a resilience
that is essential for navigating life’s challenges.
9) Following God’s word gives Direction Ps 119:105
Role of scripture in providing direction and clarity in our lives. The Bible lights up
our decisions and directions, guiding us towards a life of purpose and fulfilment. This
guidance helps us avoid the pitfalls and traps that can divert us from our true calling,
allowing us to focus on achieving the unique mission God has for each of us. Living
with purpose involves a continuous engagement with scripture, letting it renew our
minds and direct our steps daily.
10) Demonstrating Integrity and Trustworthiness Lk 16:10
It teaches that true reliability and character are demonstrated in how we handle the
smallest responsibilities. By being faithful in the little things we prove our capacity to
handle greater tasks and challenges. In seeking a purposeful life, start with what you
have now, however modest, manage it with care and integrity.
11) Aligning your actions with Biblical principles 2Tim 3: 16-17
This verse highlights the practical and transformative power of scripture. Living
purposefully means aligning our actions with biblical principles. By studying and
engaging deeply with the Bible, we equip ourselves with the knowledge, wisdom and
framework necessary to navigate life’s challenges.
12) Trusting God with all your heart Pr 3:5-6
Completely rely on God’s word, wisdom and guidance rather than our own limited
perspectives.
By submitting our decisions, plans and dreams to God, we align ourselves with His
will, which ensures that our lifes’ direction is both meaningful and fulfilling.
13) Stepping into the unknown with confidence Jos 1:9
A powerful call to live purposefully by embracing strength and courage in all aspects
of life. It remind that pursing God given purpose often involves stepping into
unknown territories or challenging circumstances. The command not to fear or be
discouraged is backed by the ultimate reassurance that God is with us in every step we
take. The promise provides the confidence needed to face obstacles and make
decisions that align with His purpose even when they seem daunting. This verse
encourages us to not just live safely but bravely and purposefully
14) Overcoming fear to pursue your potential 1Jn 4:18
Highlights the transformative power of love in overcoming fear; a common obstacle
to living purposefully. Fear holds us back from pursuing our true potential, from
taking risks and from stepping into new opportunities that align with our life’s
purpose.
The perfect love of God comforts and empowers us. This love casts out fears related
to failure, judgement and inadequacy freeing us to act boldly in pursuit of our calling.
15) Sharing your faith or mentoring others Mat 28: 19-20
defines one of our greatest purposes- to share our faith and mentor others. We have to
actively engage and teach others, expanding the impact of our lives and building a
legacy of faith. A direct call to action urging us to step beyond our comfort zones not
only spreading the word but also nurturing and supporting others in their spiritual
growth.

III. CONCEPT OF DILIGENCE
The Parable of the Talents provides helpful framework on how Christians should
think about work, success, and wealth. Matthew 25: 14 - 30
This parable teaches us that:
a) Success is a product of our diligent work.
In the book of Genesis we see that God placed Adam in the garden to work it and take
care of it.
We were made to work. As Christians we have a mission that our Lord expects us to
accomplish in the here and now.
Far too many evangelical Christians today see their salvation as simply a “bus ticket
to heaven.” They believe it doesn’t matter what they do while they “wait for the bus”
and Jesus sacrifice is all that is needed to be a Christian.
The Parable of the Talents teaches us what we are supposed to do while we await the
return of our King.
We are to diligently work, using our talents to glorify God, serve the common good,
and further God’s kingdom.
Biblical success is working diligently in the here and now using all the talents God
has given us to produce the return expected by the Master.
b) God always equip us for the task He has assigned to us
Have you ever wondered what a talent is worth in today’s dollars? It is hard to know
for sure, yet whatever its exact value, in the New Testament a talent indicates a large
sum of money, maybe even as much as a million dollars in today’s currency.
We are tempted to feel sorry for the servant who received only one talent, but in
reality he received as much as a million dollars from the master and buried it in his
back yard. He was given more than enough to meet the master’s expectations.
Just as the master expected his servants to do more than passively preserve what has
been entrusted to them, so God expects us to generate a return by using our talents
towards productive ends.
The servants were given enough to produce more – it is the same with the gifts God
has given us. The Apostle Paul writes in Ephesians 2:10:
For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works,
which God prepared in advance for us to do.
We seldom associate this verse with our work, but we should.
c) We are not equally talented
The master gave to each servant talents, “…each according to his ability.” The master
understood that the one-talent servant was not capable of producing as much as the
five-talent servant.
We want to protest this as unfair. Yet we know this is true from our own experience.
Diversity is woven into the fabric of creation.
But even though we’re not created equal in regard to the talents we’re given, there is
equality found in the Parable of the Talents. It comes from the fact that it takes just as
much work for the five-talent servant to produce five more talents as it does the two-
talent servant to produce two more talents.
This is why the reward given by the master is the same.
The master measures success by degrees of effort, as should we.
d) We are expected to work for the Master, not our own selfish purposes.
The money that is given to the servants is not their own. The money they earn with
the capital is not theirs to keep. The servants are only stewards of the master’s
investment, and it is the quality of their stewardship that the master seeks to measure.
We should maximize the use of our talents not for our own selfish purposes, but to
honor God. We know that we work in a fallen world. Because of the curse of sin, our
work will be difficult. But we should feel satisfaction and joy from doing our best
diligently working with what God has given us in the place where his providence puts
us, seeking to succeed in order to honor him.
e) We will be held accountable.
The Parable of the Talents is not about salvation or works righteousness, but about
how we use our work to fulfill our earthly callings. It is about whole-life stewardship,
or “Stewardship with a capital ‘S‘.”
The unfaithful steward in this parable didn’t so much waste the master’s money – he
wasted an opportunity. As a result, he was judged wicked and lazy. We are
responsible for what we do for God with what we have been given, and one day we
will be held responsible.
What we hear from the Master on that day is up to us.
In Matthew 25:14-30, Jesus delivered His famous parable of the talents.
The symbolism of the parable is clear:
The man who traveled to the far country represents Jesus Christ. Forty days
after His resurrection, Jesus ascended to heaven, promising to return at a later
date (Acts 1:9-11).
The servants in the parable represent Christ’s disciples—in other words,
converted Christians God has called (John 6:44).
f) When more is given, more is expected
In the ancient world, a talent was a unit of weight, in this case, a weight of silver.
According to Vine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words, a talent was
equivalent to 6,000 denarii. Since one denarius was the wage for a day’s work in the
fields, as mentioned in Matthew 20:2, that’s roughly equivalent to what would be
earned over 6,000 work days—a little over 16 years of wages! So, the rich man
entrusted a large sum of money to these three servants.
But the lesson is not about money.
In this parable, the talents represent strengths, skills and abilities God gives to people.
Some abilities we’re born with, while others are learned and developed over time. It
was because of this parable that the word talentbecame associated with abilities in the
Middle Ages.
God expects all of His servants to grow and use what they have been given as much
as they can
.In the parable, the master expected a greater gain from those who had been given
more money to invest. Likewise, God expects more from those He’s given more
abilities. That doesn’t mean He expects nothing from those who have been given less.
In the parable the first two servants produced the same percentage increase. God
expects all of His servants to grow and use what they have been given as much as
they can.
The basic principle is that God expects more from those who have been given more
(Luke 12:48). The implication for us is that we are to use and increase what we’ve
been given to the maximum extent possible.
If you’ve been given strength and energy, invest and use it in energetically serving
others. If you’ve been given certain technical skills, make use of them in serving God.
If you’ve been given financial means, put them to use in helping others. If you’ve
been given understanding, strive to learn more and humbly share it with others.
g) Christians are expected to work and grow
In many religious circles, The concepts of work and growth are rarely emphasized.
But in this parable Christ is saying that true Christians are expected to work and be
productive.
James explained how faith must be accompanied by works in a Christian’s life (James
2:17-26).
Many of Jesus’ teachings and parables emphasize the importance of growing and
producing fruit.
In the parable of the talents, the faithful servants went to work with what they were
given and grew. When they presented their results to the master, they were rewarded
(Matthew 25:21, 23).
A Christian is expected to produce and grow spiritualfruit: love, joy, peace,
longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians
5:22-23).
But how does one grow in these qualities?
Peter gives a kind of formula for spiritual growth in 2 Peter 1:5-7: “Giving all
diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to
self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness,
and to brotherly kindness love.” People who grow in these areas will be in God’s
Kingdom (verse 11).
Many of Jesus’ teachings and parables emphasize the importance of growing and
producing fruit (Matthew 12:33; 13:31-32; 7:17-20).
To learn more, read “The Fruit of the Spirit” and “2 Peter 1:5-7: Spiritual Maturity
Explained in Three Verses.”
It is dangerous to neglect growth
Christians who are called now are expected to put into practice the understanding they
have been given. They are also to highly value what God has given them (Matthew
13:44-46; 1 Peter 1:17-19).
Failing to use God’s gifts to produce the fruit God desires is dangerous.
However, some will fail to produce the fruit God desires. Here are two reasons people
may neglect growth:
Fear. The servant who buried his talent justified his lack of growth by saying
he was “afraid” of his master and the prospect of losing his money (Matthew
25:25). That fear led him to do nothing. He knew what his master expected,
but failed to act because of fear. Jesus warned that fear can be an enemy of
faith (Matthew 8:26).
Lack of preparedness. The parable of the talents is preceded by the parable of
the wise and foolish virgins. In that parable, the main lesson is that Christians
can fail to enter the Kingdom by being unprepared (Matthew 25:1-13). We
prepare for God’s Kingdom by growing spiritually. We can’t put that off and
try to “borrow” it from others at the last minute or try to rush building it (as a
student tries to cram for an exam at the last minute).
Though the servant who was given one talent described his master as “hard,” his
master saw him as “lazy.” He was lazy because he failed to invest the effort that was
required to produce something. Instead of burying his talent, the servant should have
at least “deposited [the master’s] money with the bankers” and earned some “interest”
(Matthew 25:27).
(Laziness can be a serious spiritual problem.
The main lesson we can learn from the parable of the talents is that we must use the
talents we have been given—the Holy Spirit, understanding, skills and abilities He has
given us—to grow and produce spiritually.
That is the life-impacting meaning of the parable of the talents!
IV How/ ways to become diligent - Developing a Diligent Life
a) Gain clarity of purpose / Clarify your Vision Jer 1:5, Rom 8:28, Pr 19:21
You may have the requisite skills, talent and expertise but unless you know with
certainty ‘what you want to accomplish’ you can neither plan properly nor work
effectively. What does God want to do in your life and what does He want to do
through you?
1) Set Smart Goals - Setting specific, measurable, achievable, relevant/ realistic and
time bound goals is the first step to working diligently.
Once you are aware of what you are trying to achieve, it is easier to orient your
attention and energy towards completing tasks leading to those goals.
You can set short term goals related to completing urgent tasks and fix long term
goals for career development or skill development. Once you decide on the goals,
write it down and place it prominently somewhere to remind you of what you are to
achieve.
2) Create a to do list to help prioritize urgent tasks
3) Set a Routine
With your goals and task ready, create a practical routine that help you advance
towards your goals
Depending on your job, duties and personal responsibilities, develop a schedule that
allocates dedicated time for completing specific tasks.
Include both personal and professional tasks
Try different routines and determine which one suits your schedule and life
Be flexible and know it takes time to build these habits
Make sure you include some time to look after your physical and mental wellbeing in
your daily routine
b) Adopt a thorough approach 1Cor 10:31, Col 3:23-24
1Cor 10:31- Work is a part of life and it is meant to be done with a positive attitude.
Be intentional the way you handle each task and treat each person at work today
with grace and love. This is how to bring God glory
Col 3:23-24- Identify ways you can do each thing with excellence as if God is the one
you want to please.
Mat 22:37-39- Demonstrate love for God by seeking His direction before starting task.
Look for ways to demonstrate love to your coworkers, clients by treating them
with kindness, extending grace and providing support
John 15:5- Look for inspiration in God’s word, Ask for wisdom to solve the next
problem. Talk to God throughout the day as if He was sitting next to you.
Mat 20:26-28- Look for ways to serve others. Think of their need more and than your
own need. Provide help, offer a listening ear or a word of encouragement.
Eph 2:10- No matter how insignificant the task you are performing, do it to the very
best of your ability. Use your small task to bless someone.
Diligent people take delight in doing superior work. Therefore, they are thorough in
their work, almost to a fault, and come out with outstanding results. High-quality
work is the forte of diligent people. They are careful in their approach and work
meticulously. From gathering information to understanding how a task needs to be
performed to planning and executing a particular task, diligent people have it all
figured out in life.
c) Reduce distractions Col 3:2; Ps 86:11; Mk 4:19; James 4:7; Luke 9:62
Avoiding distractions such as social media, personal calls, loud background noises
and socialising with colleagues can help you maintain focus and improve your
productivity.
Turn off notifications, block certain social media or websites on your device
Ensure you have an ergonomic work station, sufficient lighting and a comfortable
temperature
d) Effective Time Management Eph 5:15-16; James 4:13-15, Pr 27:1; Pr 16:9; Jn
16:13; Pr 6:6-8; Ps 31: 14-15; Ecc 3:1-2
Time management crucial for working diligently as it helps to organise and plan your
day to complete more tasks
It help meet deadlines, improve productivity, reduce stress and lead a more fulfilling
life
Effective Time Management involves creating a task list, prioritising urgent work,
setting realistic deadlines, taking breaks, grouping similar tasks and avoiding
multitasking.
e) Don't Procastinate Luke 14:28
f) Create Accountability Luke 12:47-48; James 4:17
Accountability hold considerable importance in Christianity as it bridges the gap
between faith and good works. Every believer is expected to follow God’s law and
uphold ethical standards reflecting personal responsibility. We are accountable for
our actions and decisions conscious that God sees everything.
Accountability is the acceptance of responsibility and consequences for your actions
by taking ownership, demonstrating initiative, identifying errors and correcting them
timely.
You can improve personal and professional accountability by being attentive,
accepting and fixing your mistakes, supporting your team members, increasing your
participation and engagement, seeking feedback, demonstrating improvement,
finding solutions and apologising when you are wrong. You can also look for people
working to achieve similar goals and collaborate with them to become mutually
accountable
g) Become Flexible - Philp 4:11- 13; 1Cor 9: 19-23
Flexibility is the ability to adapt easily to changed circumstances by modifying your
initial plan and approach
Flexibility and adaptability help people solve potential future challenges and
innovative existing products or processes. It enhances your capability to assess
evolving situations, respond to changing expectations, think of new ideas and
implement them.
Developing a positive mindset and resilience can also help you become more flexible
and adaptable.
h) Be Punctual - Eph 5:15- 16; 1Cor 14:40, James 4:17
The Bible underscores timeliness and reliability as hallmark of a fruitful life.
Develop a habit of being on time, whether it is getting to work, attending meetings,
meeting deadlines or following up with colleagues for updates. Being punctual
conveys your dedication and help you manage your time and schedules better.
Set reminder to ensure you don't miss submission deadlines
Anticipate delays and plan your day in the morning to ensure you meet all your
commitments
If you are likely to be late for reasons outside your control, make sure you
communicate this information in advance and apologise. This shows your
professionalism and accountability.
i) Create a burning desire to achieve a goal Mat 6:21, Rom 12:9-13, Col 3:23
Diligent servant enjoy and love what they do. Unless you have a strong desire and
yearn to achieve a goal, you cannot commit to it and work diligently towards it. As
soon as you connect with your goals and feel driven, your whole approach to work
changes. He works more passionately and keen to move forward and reach milestones.
j)Commit to what you do Ecc 9:10, Col 3:23-24, Pr 14:23
Commitment to your goals make your success seem real, therefore propelling you to
work diligently. Commitment make you steadfast and undeterred even when faced
with challenges you look at problems as solvable and hurdles that can be crossed.
k) Don’t overburden yourself with work 1Cor 14:40, Ps 127:1-5, Luk 12:15
Diligence requires you to work patiently by achieving a flow state and getting in the
zone. However, that is only possible when you give yourself 2–3 tasks and are not
preoccupied with limited time or looming deadlines. One of the key reasons people
rush through work and don’t give it proper attention is that they allow too much on
their plate. With a tremendous amount of workload and significant goals to achieve,
there is every possibility of you getting overwhelmed and losing sight of the big
picture. Learn to draw boundaries, say no to everything that’s not a priority, and
you’ll be able to work diligently and productively.
l) Surround yourself with task-oriented people/ Recruit Patners Proverb15:22, Ecc
4:12
The people you associate and work with greatly influence your work and life. To
develop diligence, consciously bond with and surround yourself with people who are
themselves passionate about work and stretch themselves to give their best. Diligent
and goal-oriented people set high standards for themselves, and their positive work
attitude is bound to rub on you. Slowly, you’ll notice a sea change in your way of
working as well and progress towards success.
V) The Biblical Encouragement to Be Diligent
Diligence is a virtue that extends to all life issues.
God encourages us to be diligent in the following areas:
We are called to uphold the highest standards of diligence in our service to God and
in honouring his name which demands a wholehearted pursuit of His will and
purpose. Intentionally seeking God's guidance and following His commands even
when faced with difficulties or uncertainties. It means constantly striving to grow in
spiritual maturity and wisdom and being willing to sacrifice for the sake of the
Gospel

Summary and lectures of diligent servant.pdf

  • 1. FOURSQUARE GOSPEL CHURCH ITA OSHIN DISTRICT HEADQUARTERS CHURCH, LAGOS ABEOKUTA-EXPRESSWAY, ITA OSHIN, ABEOKUTA BIBLE STUDY : THEME: DILIGENCE: FOUNDATION FOR ALL-ROUND BLESSING TOPIC : THE DILIGENT SERVANT/WORKER TEXTS: Deut 28:1-13; Mat 25: 14 - 30 I. INTRODUCTION Diligence is the ability to work hard, carefully with focus and persistence, beating all distractions and with full involvement and enthusiasm. A diligent servant understands what needs to be done, does it and perseveries to the end. He/ she accepts each task as a special assignment from the Lord and uses all energies to do it quickly and skillfully. A diligent servant put his/her heart and soul into the work and takes consistent actions towards his/her goals. He/she believes that someone or something will suffer if the work before him/her is not accomplished. It involves rising early, searching out with painstaking efforts, being earnestly eager and determined, working swiftly, skillfully, efficiently and pursuing a task promptly and energetically. II. TRAITS/ FEATURES OF A DILIGENT SERVANT a) Purposeful 1) Understanding God’s purpose for your life Jer 29:11 Speaks directly to the heart of anyone searching for purpose in life. It assures us that our lives are not random or aimless. Understanding we have a God given destiny help
  • 2. us to persevere and stay motivated and seek out the path that leads us closer to the fulfilment of God’s excellent intentions for our lives. 2) Finding meaning in every season of life Ecc 3:1 Recognising, understanding and accepting the season we are in can help us live more purposefully and peacefully. 3) Recognising you are made for a purpose Eph 2:10 Our existence is not random but purpose driven. Recognising we are made for a purpose fosters a sense of responsibility and motivation to fulfill these roles. Living with this understanding shift our focus from self centered goals to a broader, service oriented perspective, enhancing both personal fulfilment and well-being. 4) Discovering your God-given purpose Mat 6:33 Living with purpose means aligning our daily actions and decisions with God’s kingdom and His standard of righteousness. Putting God first reassures us that when we devote ourselves to a higher purpose, the practical aspects of life will follow suit. This foster a deeper relationship with God and instill a profound sense of purpose in every aspect of our lives from mundane to the monumental. 5) Loving God with all your heart, soul and mind. Mat 22: 37-39 Living with purpose is deeply rooted in love - love for God and for others. This commandment forms the cornerstone of a meaningful life. Loving God will align us with His will and open us to His transformative power.
  • 3. Loving others extends His love outward, impacting the world around us. Every interaction and decision gain purpose. 6) Glorifying God in everything 1Cor 10:31 The verse provides a powerful principle for living a life of purpose, every action should be done with the intent of glorifying God. It teaches purpose found in everyday choices we make. By dedicating our mundane tasks to God’s glory, we infuse our daily routine with eternal significance. Living this way cultivates a sense of purpose that extends beyond personal achievements focusing on creating a life that continually reflects God’s love and grace to those around us. 7) Letting your light shine as Christ’s Ambassador Mat 5:16 We are encouraged to live openly and virtuously so that others might be drawn to God through our actions. This intentional visibility of our faith and values help set a course for others to follow. 8) Living by faith not by sight 2Cor 5:7 This verse emphasize the importance of faith as the foundation for our actions and decisions rather than relying solely on what is immediately visible and understood. Living by faith means trusting in God’s promises and guidance, even when the path is not clear or the outcome is uncertain. This approach frees us from the limitations of our own perspective and open us up to divine possibilities. It encourages us to take bold steps toward our goals and dreams guided by a conviction in things not yet seen but believed to be true. This deepens our relationship with God and instill a resilience that is essential for navigating life’s challenges.
  • 4. 9) Following God’s word gives Direction Ps 119:105 Role of scripture in providing direction and clarity in our lives. The Bible lights up our decisions and directions, guiding us towards a life of purpose and fulfilment. This guidance helps us avoid the pitfalls and traps that can divert us from our true calling, allowing us to focus on achieving the unique mission God has for each of us. Living with purpose involves a continuous engagement with scripture, letting it renew our minds and direct our steps daily. 10) Demonstrating Integrity and Trustworthiness Lk 16:10 It teaches that true reliability and character are demonstrated in how we handle the smallest responsibilities. By being faithful in the little things we prove our capacity to handle greater tasks and challenges. In seeking a purposeful life, start with what you have now, however modest, manage it with care and integrity. 11) Aligning your actions with Biblical principles 2Tim 3: 16-17 This verse highlights the practical and transformative power of scripture. Living purposefully means aligning our actions with biblical principles. By studying and engaging deeply with the Bible, we equip ourselves with the knowledge, wisdom and framework necessary to navigate life’s challenges. 12) Trusting God with all your heart Pr 3:5-6 Completely rely on God’s word, wisdom and guidance rather than our own limited perspectives.
  • 5. By submitting our decisions, plans and dreams to God, we align ourselves with His will, which ensures that our lifes’ direction is both meaningful and fulfilling. 13) Stepping into the unknown with confidence Jos 1:9 A powerful call to live purposefully by embracing strength and courage in all aspects of life. It remind that pursing God given purpose often involves stepping into unknown territories or challenging circumstances. The command not to fear or be discouraged is backed by the ultimate reassurance that God is with us in every step we take. The promise provides the confidence needed to face obstacles and make decisions that align with His purpose even when they seem daunting. This verse encourages us to not just live safely but bravely and purposefully 14) Overcoming fear to pursue your potential 1Jn 4:18 Highlights the transformative power of love in overcoming fear; a common obstacle to living purposefully. Fear holds us back from pursuing our true potential, from taking risks and from stepping into new opportunities that align with our life’s purpose. The perfect love of God comforts and empowers us. This love casts out fears related to failure, judgement and inadequacy freeing us to act boldly in pursuit of our calling. 15) Sharing your faith or mentoring others Mat 28: 19-20 defines one of our greatest purposes- to share our faith and mentor others. We have to actively engage and teach others, expanding the impact of our lives and building a legacy of faith. A direct call to action urging us to step beyond our comfort zones not

CONCEPT OF DILIGENCE The Parable of the Talents provides helpful framework on how Christians should think about work, success, and wealth. Matthew 25: 14 - 30 This parable teaches us that: a) Success is a product of our diligent work. In the book of Genesis we see that God placed Adam in the garden to work it and take care of it. We were made to work. As Christians we have a mission that our Lord expects us to accomplish in the here and now. Far too many evangelical Christians today see their salvation as simply a “bus ticket to heaven.” They believe it doesn’t matter what they do while they “wait for the bus” and Jesus sacrifice is all that is needed to be a Christian.
  • 7. The Parable of the Talents teaches us what we are supposed to do while we await the return of our King. We are to diligently work, using our talents to glorify God, serve the common good, and further God’s kingdom. Biblical success is working diligently in the here and now using all the talents God has given us to produce the return expected by the Master. b) God always equip us for the task He has assigned to us Have you ever wondered what a talent is worth in today’s dollars? It is hard to know for sure, yet whatever its exact value, in the New Testament a talent indicates a large sum of money, maybe even as much as a million dollars in today’s currency. We are tempted to feel sorry for the servant who received only one talent, but in reality he received as much as a million dollars from the master and buried it in his back yard. He was given more than enough to meet the master’s expectations. Just as the master expected his servants to do more than passively preserve what has been entrusted to them, so God expects us to generate a return by using our talents towards productive ends. The servants were given enough to produce more – it is the same with the gifts God has given us. The Apostle Paul writes in Ephesians 2:10: For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. We seldom associate this verse with our work, but we should. c) We are not equally talented The master gave to each servant talents, “…each according to his ability.” The master understood that the one-talent servant was not capable of producing as much as the five-talent servant. We want to protest this as unfair. Yet we know this is true from our own experience. Diversity is woven into the fabric of creation. But even though we’re not created equal in regard to the talents we’re given, there is equality found in the Parable of the Talents. It comes from the fact that it takes just as much work for the five-talent servant to produce five more talents as it does the two- talent servant to produce two more talents. This is why the reward given by the master is the same. The master measures success by degrees of effort, as should we. d) We are expected to work for the Master, not our own selfish purposes.
  • 8. The money that is given to the servants is not their own. The money they earn with the capital is not theirs to keep. The servants are only stewards of the master’s investment, and it is the quality of their stewardship that the master seeks to measure. We should maximize the use of our talents not for our own selfish purposes, but to honor God. We know that we work in a fallen world. Because of the curse of sin, our work will be difficult. But we should feel satisfaction and joy from doing our best diligently working with what God has given us in the place where his providence puts us, seeking to succeed in order to honor him. e) We will be held accountable. The Parable of the Talents is not about salvation or works righteousness, but about how we use our work to fulfill our earthly callings. It is about whole-life stewardship, or “Stewardship with a capital ‘S‘.” The unfaithful steward in this parable didn’t so much waste the master’s money – he wasted an opportunity. As a result, he was judged wicked and lazy. We are responsible for what we do for God with what we have been given, and one day we will be held responsible. What we hear from the Master on that day is up to us. In Matthew 25:14-30, Jesus delivered His famous parable of the talents. The symbolism of the parable is clear: The man who traveled to the far country represents Jesus Christ. Forty days after His resurrection, Jesus ascended to heaven, promising to return at a later date (Acts 1:9-11). The servants in the parable represent Christ’s disciples—in other words, converted Christians God has called (John 6:44). f) When more is given, more is expected In the ancient world, a talent was a unit of weight, in this case, a weight of silver. According to Vine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words, a talent was equivalent to 6,000 denarii. Since one denarius was the wage for a day’s work in the fields, as mentioned in Matthew 20:2, that’s roughly equivalent to what would be
  • 9. earned over 6,000 work days—a little over 16 years of wages! So, the rich man entrusted a large sum of money to these three servants. But the lesson is not about money. In this parable, the talents represent strengths, skills and abilities God gives to people. Some abilities we’re born with, while others are learned and developed over time. It was because of this parable that the word talentbecame associated with abilities in the Middle Ages. God expects all of His servants to grow and use what they have been given as much as they can .In the parable, the master expected a greater gain from those who had been given more money to invest. Likewise, God expects more from those He’s given more abilities. That doesn’t mean He expects nothing from those who have been given less. In the parable the first two servants produced the same percentage increase. God expects all of His servants to grow and use what they have been given as much as they can. The basic principle is that God expects more from those who have been given more (Luke 12:48). The implication for us is that we are to use and increase what we’ve been given to the maximum extent possible. If you’ve been given strength and energy, invest and use it in energetically serving others. If you’ve been given certain technical skills, make use of them in serving God. If you’ve been given financial means, put them to use in helping others. If you’ve been given understanding, strive to learn more and humbly share it with others. g) Christians are expected to work and grow In many religious circles, The concepts of work and growth are rarely emphasized. But in this parable Christ is saying that true Christians are expected to work and be productive. James explained how faith must be accompanied by works in a Christian’s life (James 2:17-26). Many of Jesus’ teachings and parables emphasize the importance of growing and producing fruit. In the parable of the talents, the faithful servants went to work with what they were given and grew. When they presented their results to the master, they were rewarded (Matthew 25:21, 23). A Christian is expected to produce and grow spiritualfruit: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). But how does one grow in these qualities?
  • 10. Peter gives a kind of formula for spiritual growth in 2 Peter 1:5-7: “Giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love.” People who grow in these areas will be in God’s Kingdom (verse 11). Many of Jesus’ teachings and parables emphasize the importance of growing and producing fruit (Matthew 12:33; 13:31-32; 7:17-20). To learn more, read “The Fruit of the Spirit” and “2 Peter 1:5-7: Spiritual Maturity Explained in Three Verses.” It is dangerous to neglect growth Christians who are called now are expected to put into practice the understanding they have been given. They are also to highly value what God has given them (Matthew 13:44-46; 1 Peter 1:17-19). Failing to use God’s gifts to produce the fruit God desires is dangerous. However, some will fail to produce the fruit God desires. Here are two reasons people may neglect growth: Fear. The servant who buried his talent justified his lack of growth by saying he was “afraid” of his master and the prospect of losing his money (Matthew 25:25). That fear led him to do nothing. He knew what his master expected, but failed to act because of fear. Jesus warned that fear can be an enemy of faith (Matthew 8:26). Lack of preparedness. The parable of the talents is preceded by the parable of the wise and foolish virgins. In that parable, the main lesson is that Christians can fail to enter the Kingdom by being unprepared (Matthew 25:1-13). We prepare for God’s Kingdom by growing spiritually. We can’t put that off and try to “borrow” it from others at the last minute or try to rush building it (as a student tries to cram for an exam at the last minute). Though the servant who was given one talent described his master as “hard,” his master saw him as “lazy.” He was lazy because he failed to invest the effort that was required to produce something. Instead of burying his talent, the servant should have at least “deposited [the master’s] money with the bankers” and earned some “interest” (Matthew 25:27). (Laziness can be a serious spiritual problem. The main lesson we can learn from the parable of the talents is that we must use the talents we have been given—the Holy Spirit, understanding, skills and abilities He has given us—to grow and produce spiritually. That is the life-impacting meaning of the parable of the talents!
  • 11. IV How/ ways to become diligent - Developing a Diligent Life a) Gain clarity of purpose / Clarify your Vision Jer 1:5, Rom 8:28, Pr 19:21 You may have the requisite skills, talent and expertise but unless you know with certainty ‘what you want to accomplish’ you can neither plan properly nor work effectively. What does God want to do in your life and what does He want to do through you? 1) Set Smart Goals - Setting specific, measurable, achievable, relevant/ realistic and time bound goals is the first step to working diligently. Once you are aware of what you are trying to achieve, it is easier to orient your attention and energy towards completing tasks leading to those goals. You can set short term goals related to completing urgent tasks and fix long term goals for career development or skill development. Once you decide on the goals, write it down and place it prominently somewhere to remind you of what you are to achieve. 2) Create a to do list to help prioritize urgent tasks 3) Set a Routine With your goals and task ready, create a practical routine that help you advance towards your goals Depending on your job, duties and personal responsibilities, develop a schedule that allocates dedicated time for completing specific tasks. Include both personal and professional tasks Try different routines and determine which one suits your schedule and life
  • 12. Be flexible and know it takes time to build these habits Make sure you include some time to look after your physical and mental wellbeing in your daily routine b) Adopt a thorough approach 1Cor 10:31, Col 3:23-24 1Cor 10:31- Work is a part of life and it is meant to be done with a positive attitude. Be intentional the way you handle each task and treat each person at work today with grace and love. This is how to bring God glory Col 3:23-24- Identify ways you can do each thing with excellence as if God is the one you want to please. Mat 22:37-39- Demonstrate love for God by seeking His direction before starting task. Look for ways to demonstrate love to your coworkers, clients by treating them with kindness, extending grace and providing support John 15:5- Look for inspiration in God’s word, Ask for wisdom to solve the next problem. Talk to God throughout the day as if He was sitting next to you. Mat 20:26-28- Look for ways to serve others. Think of their need more and than your own need. Provide help, offer a listening ear or a word of encouragement. Eph 2:10- No matter how insignificant the task you are performing, do it to the very best of your ability. Use your small task to bless someone. Diligent people take delight in doing superior work. Therefore, they are thorough in their work, almost to a fault, and come out with outstanding results. High-quality work is the forte of diligent people. They are careful in their approach and work meticulously. From gathering information to understanding how a task needs to be performed to planning and executing a particular task, diligent people have it all figured out in life.
  • 13. c) Reduce distractions Col 3:2; Ps 86:11; Mk 4:19; James 4:7; Luke 9:62 Avoiding distractions such as social media, personal calls, loud background noises and socialising with colleagues can help you maintain focus and improve your productivity. Turn off notifications, block certain social media or websites on your device Ensure you have an ergonomic work station, sufficient lighting and a comfortable temperature d) Effective Time Management Eph 5:15-16; James 4:13-15, Pr 27:1; Pr 16:9; Jn 16:13; Pr 6:6-8; Ps 31: 14-15; Ecc 3:1-2 Time management crucial for working diligently as it helps to organise and plan your day to complete more tasks It help meet deadlines, improve productivity, reduce stress and lead a more fulfilling life Effective Time Management involves creating a task list, prioritising urgent work, setting realistic deadlines, taking breaks, grouping similar tasks and avoiding multitasking. e) Don't Procastinate Luke 14:28 f) Create Accountability Luke 12:47-48; James 4:17 Accountability hold considerable importance in Christianity as it bridges the gap between faith and good works. Every believer is expected to follow God’s law and
  • 14. uphold ethical standards reflecting personal responsibility. We are accountable for our actions and decisions conscious that God sees everything. Accountability is the acceptance of responsibility and consequences for your actions by taking ownership, demonstrating initiative, identifying errors and correcting them timely. You can improve personal and professional accountability by being attentive, accepting and fixing your mistakes, supporting your team members, increasing your participation and engagement, seeking feedback, demonstrating improvement, finding solutions and apologising when you are wrong. You can also look for people working to achieve similar goals and collaborate with them to become mutually accountable g) Become Flexible - Philp 4:11- 13; 1Cor 9: 19-23 Flexibility is the ability to adapt easily to changed circumstances by modifying your initial plan and approach Flexibility and adaptability help people solve potential future challenges and innovative existing products or processes. It enhances your capability to assess evolving situations, respond to changing expectations, think of new ideas and implement them. Developing a positive mindset and resilience can also help you become more flexible and adaptable. h) Be Punctual - Eph 5:15- 16; 1Cor 14:40, James 4:17 The Bible underscores timeliness and reliability as hallmark of a fruitful life.
  • 15. Develop a habit of being on time, whether it is getting to work, attending meetings, meeting deadlines or following up with colleagues for updates. Being punctual conveys your dedication and help you manage your time and schedules better. Set reminder to ensure you don't miss submission deadlines Anticipate delays and plan your day in the morning to ensure you meet all your commitments If you are likely to be late for reasons outside your control, make sure you communicate this information in advance and apologise. This shows your professionalism and accountability. i) Create a burning desire to achieve a goal Mat 6:21, Rom 12:9-13, Col 3:23 Diligent servant enjoy and love what they do. Unless you have a strong desire and yearn to achieve a goal, you cannot commit to it and work diligently towards it. As soon as you connect with your goals and feel driven, your whole approach to work changes. He works more passionately and keen to move forward and reach milestones. j)Commit to what you do Ecc 9:10, Col 3:23-24, Pr 14:23 Commitment to your goals make your success seem real, therefore propelling you to work diligently. Commitment make you steadfast and undeterred even when faced with challenges you look at problems as solvable and hurdles that can be crossed. k) Don’t overburden yourself with work 1Cor 14:40, Ps 127:1-5, Luk 12:15 Diligence requires you to work patiently by achieving a flow state and getting in the zone. However, that is only possible when you give yourself 2–3 tasks and are not
  • 16. preoccupied with limited time or looming deadlines. One of the key reasons people rush through work and don’t give it proper attention is that they allow too much on their plate. With a tremendous amount of workload and significant goals to achieve, there is every possibility of you getting overwhelmed and losing sight of the big picture. Learn to draw boundaries, say no to everything that’s not a priority, and you’ll be able to work diligently and productively. l) Surround yourself with task-oriented people/ Recruit Patners Proverb15:22, Ecc 4:12 The people you associate and work with greatly influence your work and life. To develop diligence, consciously bond with and surround yourself with people who are themselves passionate about work and stretch themselves to give their best. Diligent and goal-oriented people set high standards for themselves, and their positive work attitude is bound to rub on you. Slowly, you’ll notice a sea change in your way of working as well and progress towards success. V) The Biblical Encouragement to Be Diligent Diligence is a virtue that extends to all life issues. God encourages us to be diligent in the following areas: We are called to uphold the highest standards of diligence in our service to God and in honouring his name which demands a wholehearted pursuit of His will and purpose. Intentionally seeking God's guidance and following His commands even when faced with difficulties or uncertainties. It means constantly striving to grow in spiritual maturity and wisdom and being willing to sacrifice for the sake of the Gospel
