• When we suggest/recommend an action to
someone, we can use a that-clause:
I suggest (that) you leave here around four
o’clock.
I recommend (that) you take those pills.
*If you remove “that”, the sentence becomes
more informal.

• We can use suggest/recommend with the -ing
form of a verb when we mention an action but
do not mention the person who will do it,
because it is understood in the context:
She suggested travelling together for safety.
They recommend applying for a post two
months before.

question word such as where, what, who, how:
Could you suggest where I might be able to buy
a nice sweater for Mark?
Do you recommend us where we can eat
today?

infinitive:
Not: Dora suggested to wait …
Not: The doctor recommended not to drink
alcohol.
How would we say this if we mention who?

These clubs provide a much appreciated service for
this area.
• (provide someone with) Equip or supply someone
with (something useful or necessary):
We were provided with a map of the area.
• [NO OBJECT] (provide for) Make adequate
preparation for (a possible event):
New qualifications must provide for changes in
technology.
