Community Dynamics and Community Actions

- 2. This course focuses on the application of ideas and methods of the social sciences to understand, investigate, and examine challenges of contemporary community life. It focuses on community-action initiatives such as community engagement, solidarity, and citizenship as guided by the core values of human rights, social justice, empowerment and advocacy, gender equality, and participatory development. It aims at enhancing students’ sense of shared identity and willingness to contribute to the pursuit of the common good of the community. It enables students to integrate applied social sciences into community-action initiatives.

Explain the importance of studying community dynamics and community action in relation to applied social sciences and the learner’s future career options. • Why is it important to study the community and its dynamics? • How important is the study of community to our future as an individual and as a collective? • How can critical knowledge about the community affects us and others?
- 6. ● was derived form the Latin word “communis” which means common or shared. Thus the general understanding of the word community is that it is a social unit compose of people who have something in common.
- 7. Geographical – the members of the community share the same geographical vicinity, such as a village, province, our neighbourhood. Non-Geographical - these communities are formed based on needs, ideas, interest, identity, practices and rules and social institutions such as at home, at work and government, society or the community at large. 1 2
- 8. Micro level – a group is formed based on personal social ties. This may include groups formed for pursuing common interest or goals, like forming a small organization to hold a fundraising activity such as concert. Macro level – large groups affiliations are formed such as national, international and virtual communities. Companies and corporations may develop various programs that would include the different members across the country. They will work on meeting certain objectives and expand on the aspect of the community involvement.

- 13. - is any activity that aims to increase the understanding, engagement and empowerment of communities for the intention of giving services to people. It is also described as as a social action or community engagement. Activities are aligned with the objectives based on the roles that the community plays. In community action, local citizens engage in planning, design and delivery of local services.
