MANAGERS WHO CHANGED THE WORLD
INTRODUCTION
The world of work has changed dramatically over the past decade. Companies are more
global and employee groups more diverse than ever before.
Organizational structures are less hierarchical and more collaborative. And today’s
networked offices are full of technological distractions
 It is more important for the manager to know how to manage the workers than to know
how to do their work well.
 Managers may direct workers directly or
they may direct several supervisors who
direct the workers.
 The manager must be familiar with the work
of all the groups he/she supervises
WHO IS MANAGER???????
 A manager is An individual who is in charge of a certain group of tasks , or a
certain subset of a company .
 A Manager is the person responsible for planning and directing the work of a
group of individuals, monitoring their work, and taking corrective action when
necessary.
Example
 A restaurant will often have a front-of-house manager who helps the patrons,
and supervises the hosts;
 A specific office project can have a manager, known simply as the project
manager.
?

Manager .
ESSENTIAL SKILLS FOR THE FUTURE MANAGER
Critical Thinking :
 Critical thinking is the ability to analyze
situations or statements and determine their
validity
 Critical thinking breeds creative thinking,
which in turn solves problems.
Analytical Skills
 Successful managers have analytical minds.
 They know the value of the vast amount of
data available today, and are highly
interested in what that data can reveal about
consumer behavior, efficacy of various
marketing approaches and more.
Holistic Approach
 A holistic view means that we are interested in
engaging and developing the whole person.
 You can think of this as different levels,
physical, emotional, mental and spiritual
 Future managers will approach marketing by
thinking in terms of integrated, interconnected
systems, and how they affect each other.
Technical Skills
 Technical skills are the knowledge and
capabilities to perform specialized task
 Because technology will continue to advance
and closely influence how marketing is
accomplished, it will always be important for
managers to be tech savvy.
Code Switching Between Cultures
 “cultural code-switching”—the ability to modify
behavior in specific situations to accommodate
varying cultural norms.
 Code-switching requires far more than the right mind-
set, information, and motivation.
 It requires a capacity to manage the psychological
challenges that arise when someone tries to translate
cultural knowledge into action.
Wielding Digital Influence
 As companies become less hierarchical, the
effective use of online networks will be crucial to
success..
 It’s easy to reach out to industry contacts and
colleagues through LinkedIn and Facebook, to
follow and be followed on Twitter.
Communication
 It is a two way process of reaching mutual
understanding, in which participants not only
exchange information, new ideas and
feelings but also create and share meaning
 Lack of communication about how to propose
ideas and creative visions discourages people
from proposing those ideas and visions.
Leadership quality
 a manager MUST be a leader, that is, he or she
must earn followers and not command respect.
 A manager cannot be someone placed in a position
of power simply because they bring in the most
money or are the best at delegating.
Managers Who Changed the World
he made an incomparable impression upon
GE’s culture and strategy.
1. Jeffrey Immelt (General Electric)
2. Steven Reinemund (Pepsi Co)
He made soda and potato chips to be mark
of success in contemporary world of
corporate competition.
he made pepsi to $27 billion food and
beverage giant as PepsiCo
3.Hector Ruiz (Advanced Micro Devices)
Under his presidentship he gave stiff
competition to the rival company Intel
Corporation
he made an agenda for next generation PC
designs.
4.Anne Mulcahy (Xerox)
Anne Mulcahy when joined the company, the
biggest problem faced by the company was in
$14billion in debt. However she made sharp
staff and business cuts and brought new chief
financial officer and stabilized the company and
put down debt to around $9.8 billion.
5.Phil Knight (Nike)
He stared his career from selling Japanese
sneakers from the trunk of his car. And took
nearly 40 years to make it $12.3 billion sports
conglomerate. During 1980s and 1990s he
completely changed the rules of the games
for sports
CONCLUSION
It is vital for all management students to
be aware of these expectations and to be
competent in the skills that are required
in order to meet them. Without doing so,
the students’ grades will suffer
