LEVELS OF
COMPREHENSION
COMPREHENSIVE READING
• It is simply the understanding of what you read
• It is determined by answering questions about the
selection read
• It includes predicting, summarizing and critical
thinking
INFERRING THE MAIN IDEA
•INFERRING is a comprehension skill which
involves the use of information presented in the
text and connecting it to your own knowledge.
• The interconnection of the author’s text and your
schema would enable you to make inferences or
guesses about the text.
LEVELS OF COMPREHENSION
LEVEL 1. Literal Comprehension
LEVEL 2. Inferential Comprehension
LEVEL 3. Applied Comprehension
LEVEL 1. LITERAL COMPREHENSION
(reading what is right there)
It involves understanding of the message directly
stated in the text.
Here the reader finds the answer in the text. The
reader might be asked to do any of the following:
• Identify the main ideas of the paragraph or short story.
• Recall details that support the main ideas.
• Organize the sequence in which the main events occurred.
LEVEL 1. LITERAL COMPREHENSION
(reading what is right there)
Examples of literal question starters:
• What happened . . . ?
• How many . . . ?
• How did . . . ?
• Who . . . ?
• What is . . . ?
• Which . . . ?
LEVEL 2. INFERENTIAL COMPREHENSION
(reading between the lines)
• The reader is able to make inferences, draw
conclusions and predict outcomes from
information implicitly stated in the text.
• Here, the reader interprets the information to
find answers. The reader might be asked to any
of the following:
• Predict endings and anticipate consequences.
• State reasons for events.
• Make generalizations.
LEVEL 2. INFERENTIAL COMPREHENSION
(reading between the lines)
Examples of interpretive question starters:
• Why did . . . ?
• What was . . . ?
• What do you think about . . . ?
• Can you explain…?
• How was this similar to . . . ?
LEVEL 3. APPLIED COMPREHENSION
(reading beyond the lines)
• The reader is able to use his/her experiences
and prior knowledge into the written text in
making an evaluation.
• Here the reader makes links between the text
and his or her own experience and knowledge to
develop an answer. The reader asks open-ended
questions to promote deeper understanding.
LEVEL 3. APPLIED COMPREHENSION
(reading beyond the lines)
The reader is asked to do the following:
• Make generalizations.
• Make comparisons.
• Make judgments.
• Make recommendations and suggestions.
• Make decisions.
• Create alternative endings.
LEVEL 3. APPLIED COMPREHENSION
(reading beyond the lines)
Examples of applied question starters:
• How would you…?
• Do you agree . . . ?
• What would have happened if . . . ?
• How might . . . ?
• What effect does . . . ?
• If you were . . .
• What would you . . . ?
